Including me. I was reminded again how much the education system in America has failed. Another Walmart adventure.
Tuesday night I ran in to pick up one item with the intent of paying cash. I head to the express checkout, "20 items or less." There is a young woman with her daughter ahead of me. She has a carry basket with at least 35 items in it which she unloads on to the counter for the clerk to ring up. My guess based on the items is somewhere around $85 to $90 worth of items just by eyeballing. When the amount reaches about 60 the young woman stops the clerk. She begins to take items out of her loaded shopping cart to be scanned and removed from her total. When they finish the young woman had a $50 giftcard and about $6 in cash. Often times if the person ahead of me is a few dollars short I will make up the difference but when you miss your spendable amount by double you need help beyond a few dollars. The clerk now is stuck with items including ice cream which someone must return to the store. I see this far too often in stores where the basic math and reading skills are lacking.
I am reminded that everyone has their own burdens but I admire the patience the cashiers at stores must have today.
Boogles me even more than she can't count the number of items she's got in her basket!
My assumption is she chose not to read the sign or is illiterate.
Actually I have asked one of the cashiers about that in Walmart once. She noticed me walking up to another register with a line and told me to come over. I had twice the number of items and that's why I skipped her empty line. When I pointed out how many items I had, she said that it was okay that the 20 item rule isn't really a rule, just a general guide for those with limited items. They don't sit there and count your items and kick you out for 21 items.
I can see entering the line with 25 or 30 items, that wouldn't upset me, but I would have a problem if someone tried to go through with a full cart.
It would actually be bad for business if they strictly enforced the 20 item limit.
Having cash is a major pain for me. They closed the bank on campus, and thus the nearest set of free ATM's a few months back and the new bank won't be opening for months. So I tend to use the card a lot. I like cash, but I never seem to have any on me.
Yea, same here. I almost never have any actual cash on me which is not really a problem until I want to use a vending machine or something. Using the card to make small $1-$5 purchases starts getting ridiculous to me though.

My paycheck goes directly to my checking account, and I just don't see the need to go get a 20 out of the ATM that I probably will forget about or lose lol.
Cashiers look more annoyed when I ask them to break a $20 for a $1 purchase than when I swipe my card for it. :s
I agree with this 100%
This is how I do it and I use my card for everything. I can weeks without any cash on me.
It takes much less time paying for my coffee/lunch/misc items with a card than with cash. Hell, my card has the "blink" chip in it so I don't even need to swipe it in most cases.

Here is the info on it

and this is what the symbol on the card looks like

A lot of businesses here will not allow you to use a credit card for purchases under a certain amount. The amount varies. I try never to use my card for less than $10.
I love it when a bill comes out to something like $7.25 and I give the cashier $10.25 and they then they either look at me strange like why did I give them the extra quarter or they just give me the quarter back because they already have the 10 spot LOL

I don't see why they should have signs that say "20 items or less" then, saves a bit of money on signage or at least they could replace it with a corp sponser or something like most American things do.I prefer to use self-service (DON'T EVEN SAY ANYTHING!) checkouts whenever possible, I can go at my own pace without being rushed.

LOL! Hey! I have panicked in that situation too! You know what it is ... besides poor math skill ... it is that people usually pay with an even bill so you get used to just typing in the amount that they give you and the screen saying what to give back.
... I learned to just wait until I had the payment so I could type in EXACTLY what I was given. Hehe
