What are your thoughts? Do you approve of the Hyphenated American theme? Or do you believe that should be dropped?

I personally do not approve of Hyphenated America, I believe back in the day it was a acceptable idea. However, I dont think America is a "melting pot" anymore. I think its as singular of a country as China or England.

Surprisingly I was thinking the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. Personally I consider myself an American. Both my grandparents and parents were born in the USA.

Rather than asking, why not just use google?

Hyphenated American - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Geez you are the one who started the thread. If you want to discuss things then explain your version of the idea rather than to tell the guy to google. :wtf:

as to the question itself our country did have hyphenated classes so to speak. that kind of disappeared until the African-American shit started. and yeah it is BS me thinks. We are AMERICANS.

Well unless some of thel assholes like Obama get their way. :thumbdown

Actually, if you dont know anything about the topic, why post your uninformed opinions? This is supposed to be the place to post your own ideas, if you dont know anything about it/make it up on the fly, it really isnt the place to post it IMO.

As for African-Americans, that is entirly untrue. It applies to ANY immigrant who has arrived here and is not willing to give up traditions, and expects our country to cater to their needs/accept their ideas. While I dont think we should impose on other peoples ideas, I think they need to accept they arent in China, they arent in Ireland, they arent in Mexico they are in America.

Try reading before typing. ;)

I never said it only referred to African Americans only

And glad to know you are in charge here telling others how they should or should not respond. :urstupid:

Well, it's not so bad to ask someone what something is. We are a community here. Plus, people might explain it in easier terms so it's easier to understand.

Im not claiming to be in charge, not by any means. I am also aware you didnt say just African Americans, but you did specifically point a finger at something that shouldnt be specific.

As for not wanting to explain the subject, I already gave my opinion on it, so its clear I already have some sort of bias. Community or not, I am willing to discuss it, but to intelligently do so he woud have to have a fair, developed idea of the concept to be discussed. Even so, I gave a link which better describes hyphenated americanism than I could do so in words. Sorry if I came off as a douchebag, its really not my intent.

No problem Hans

I was thinking more like dipstick though :D

Ok, why should not it be specified? I don't see much spoken about Irish Americans for example anymore. The predominant hyphenated one is the Afro American

This subject isnt something new, it was at a peak around Roosevelt if my memory serves me correctly, but its fundamentals are still an issue today. The actual hyphenated names arent the issue either, thats realitivly unimporant. The issues are the ideals that come along with them, such as not wanting to learn a new language, expecting festivals for their previous lands holdiays, not adapting to an American lifestyle.

As for Dana, very mature of you.

Hey I asked a question and you had to be dickish. Sure I could have googled it. I hadn't thought of it at the moment. Are you like that to everyone who has a legit question? maybe I shouldn't have said "wtf" maybe that made my comment less worth an explanation? Oh well.

My only issue is this is not a discussion forum. Its a debate forum. I DID provide a link for information, but rather taking the time to ask what it is, you could use the same amount of time to inform yourself on the topic.

Anyways, lets not derail this anymore.

If you read the part under where I said to google, youll find a link.

As for controlling, if you read my post, youd know this also isnt the case. If a person wishes to maintain their traditions, thats fine so long as its kept to themselves/their house. Its when the people expect other Americans to cater to their needs, such as their language, festivals, needs, thats the issue with hyphenated americans. This isnt a melting pot anymore, its America. We have our own traditions, we have our own ideals, we have our own people who have been here for many, many generations, we should not have to mold to fit the needs of new people here.

Yeah, thats how pasted links are from certain sites.

Anyways, asian-american, philipino-american, mexican-american. Not that it really matters, as mentioned, thats really not the issue :p ANY group of ANY non-American background that expects people to cater to them, instead of realizing they moved here, and they should try their hardest to fit in without needing special attention.

How does that make them catered to?

and I don't hear these other ones you refer to.

Catering signs to people who dont speak english, catering special classees to people who dont attempt to learn english, catering entire events and tax dollars to other people just to make them feel more like they are at their home. These are the issues with hypenated America. As to the groups, they most definitely exist, and if you took college level American Studies/history courses, or read anything about the subject on the melting pot, youd most definitely hear them. Or if you just paid attention to other happenings in the American community rather than the mainstream news.

Dude I have not been to college since the real protests back in the day. :D

I live life on the street and not in a college atmosphere.

I advise you do the same. You will see what is out there and not what academia shovels to you
