How green are we really?

I was born at the end of the 1950's. My parents and grandparents had dealt with real shortages of products due to wars and the depression. I grew up recycling drink bottles. Milk man re-used milk bottles. We re-used paper bags from the stores. If something broke we had it repaired. Everyone drove around on re-capped tires to save money. Seems we were far less wasteful than today.

Now a major appliance or TV or computer starts not working properly we scrap it and buy another. The movie Wall-E probably is very close to accurate.

we live in a throw away society

we dont want to pay for well made goods when we can pay less for cheaper materials

the problem is that the markets that produce these cheaper goods have learned to make really good quality goods and still cheaper than we can make ( labour costs) so we are encouraged to keep buying cheap goods and replace them before they break, this is due to our greed rather than our need
