so- i went to dunkin donuts this morning.. and the kid at the drive thru asked me how much i paid for my car... i thought it was inppropriate, so i just said "oh i dunno" (meaning "i'm not telling you")
he said to me "oh- daddy paid for it, right"
so i respond "umm, no- but you apparently dont know that's not a question you ask a stranger"- got my coffee and drove off

then, i just went food shopping, and on the way home-i wanted coffee (different dunkin donuts) and i pull through the drive thru and the kid asks me how much i paid for my car!!!! WHATTTT the hell is that all about????

its not just me, right---- that's a rude question to ask someone, correct?

Actually most people that are strangers that ask that question mean that as a compliment and want to knwo where you got it and how much you paid for it (so they know which dealership is selling it for what) because they probably want to go buy one themselves ;). I don't think people mean any disrespect by asking that.

Relatives and friends may do it to find out your personal business, but the kid at a drive-thru really has no other motive other than liking your car and wanting to find a good deal on it. :)

That was a snide remark to your obvious denial of him a sking .. that's just how young kids respond when told "no" sometimes.

He probably thought you were being smart with him .. not the correct respose from him .. but an expected one imo.

Why? Not all dealerships sell cars for the same price. The only way to find out if someone got a better deal than you have been offered at some dealership .. is to personally ask someone who has the same thing you are looking into buying.

The correct question would have been: "hey, I really like this car, I've been looking into getting one/I'd like to look into getting one .. would you mind if I asked how much you ended up paying for it .. I've been getting different prices all over town/I've been looking for a good deal all over town?"

this generation of kids are terible.

but when ever someone asks me how much i have in my wallet and how much something costs i just say Enough or none of your business if there rude.

but when i was a really little kid i used to go upto strangers and say " Hi my names Bill, whats yours? What colors your bathroom, mines blue?

lol. but thats different since i was really young.

I don't think it's that rude at all, but to some it is considered that. I'll tell people how much I paid for my car (overpriced) but hey, it's been cheap to repair. 170 bucks total in 'repairs' in four years.

But I dunno Heather, I'd just forget about it. I doubt he could afford a Civic anyway, these cars hold their value too well, he'd be looking at a 96-00 if he is wanting one.
