You're right... it isn't but if they do that doesn't make them a homophobe or an asshole. It's how they go about disagreeing that would turn them into an asshole or homophobe.

Agreed. That right there is what makes all the difference. In reality you can sit at home and stew and hate homosexuals all day and night. It's those who decide to take it to the streets that are the real problem, and in reality should probably be classified as something other than a homophobe.

But generational gaps don't excuse prejudices either. Unless you're talking about the terminology itself, in which case we're in agreement. But just as "queer" doesn't refer to referring to something strange any longer... people need to stay up with the times on what words mean now as opposed to what they meant 20 years ago.

That's a tad arrogant is assuming we old fucks have to stay utd with you youngsters. Who the fuck makes that rule ? Oh ya... the youngsters. :D

Well there are things I hear on and off that I have no fucking idea what they mean. When I ask for a definition I usually get it but not always. Case in point.... I've asked a question twice in this thread and haven't received a reply so how the fuck am I to adapt if I can't get a definition? http://www.offtopicz.net/showthread.php?t=77143

I disagree, like I said before, I don't feel there can ever be a respectful, humanizing way to disagree with the way a person was born.

I don't think it's arrogant at all... I try to make sure I know the meaning of a word before I say it, or find out the meaning of something that I thought I knew that has been changed by the two generations that follow mine. I'm in the same boat as you are to some degree :p I just have less generations after mine than you do. ;)

That's like saying that people aren't allowed to have an opinion about anything though. So long as they're not telling people that they're wrong and going to burn in hell or something, a simple disagreement with something isn't inappropriate in my estimation. :dunno

That all being said... being afraid of, prejudiced against, or otherwise having a negative opinion about someone because of their sexual orientation is pathetic and disgusting. I think that's something we can agree on. ;)

But one is not born a democrat, or a goth, or a mime, yanno? To disagree with something that someone doesn't have an active choice over goes into more than just a simple opinion territory, it's dehumanizing, to me :dunno

I disagree. If someone sits at home and stews, they're still a homophobe. It's good they're not out campaigning, but they're still a homophobe. It's a negative connotation because it's a negative attitude.

This is how I feel as well.

I agree 100% and people are always going to be that way. I guess what I really wanted to say is that if you want to sit home and stew about it, that's your choice. It is your right even. Just don't bring that negative stuff outside for people to be hurt over. I was not condoning that mindset, but I recognize it is a persons right to their opinion regardless of the topic.

It sounded snarky but I mean it. People do have the right to be assholes! and everything in between. Just sucks when they choose to be that way.

I do the same thing but it's obvious we don't agree on the definition of the word. I use the dictionary definition and you use the one that suits you. If you want me to " swing your way " :D and accept your definition I'm willing to do it. All you have to do is contact the dictionary companies and have them change the definition. Deal?

It would be heterosexism, a bias in favor of opposite sex relationships.
I'm thinking of bias against opposite sex relationships.

freedictionary.com-het·er·o·sex·ism (h t -r -s k s z m). n. Discrimination or prejudice against lesbians or gay men by heterosexual people. ...

Now I'm confused.

Ok so let me play the devils advocate for a minute ok.

If I said that people that agree with homosexuality are assholes that would be ok according to your standards? Who sets the rules? How are the rules set and who sets 'em? Did anyone ask the " older " generation? After all they do have a hell of a lot more life experience than the younger generation and their voice should be heard and count for something. Or... does it count only when it conforms to the younger generations way of thinking?

You have the right to form whatever opinion you'd like. Doesn't make it ok or necessarily correct, but it's your right. Like that disgusting Westboro cult :D

Society makes and sets the rules, vastly based on power dynamics and religion, sadly...tradition, current needs, etc. There really are no hard and fast "rules" except laws and social mores we sanction with more opinions.

For me, it's as simple as having compassion for how hard it must be to feel same sex attraction when you know it could ruin your future. It's none of my business, they're people like any other, and I don't think the way they're born was wrong. Why be negative, or hateful?

I am not too interested in being baited into a generationist slap fight with you. I will leave that topic to retro, as I didn't mention anything about it.

Nobody so far has said it's wrong but ya'll are assuming some of us think it is. Nobody has come out and said anything negative or hateful but ya'll think some of us are. Because ya'll don't like the older established term you invent a new word, lump 'em all in the same heap, and throw stones whenever ya'll can and expect the old fuckers to catch 'em without getting hit.

You weren't even in the thread until now so no one was assuming you were doing anything. I don't know you at all, and didn't even judge that you do have an issue with gay people until this last post where you threw yourself in.

The Doc is a homophobe, I will say I suspect that. The "older established term" too. Just how I see it.

There haven't even been many, I think most of us are talking about people we know, not necessarily members of the forum. Badboy was the only one who really said he disagreed with homosexuality outright, which I don't think anyone said was homophobia, just...assholic.

For those who disagree with homosexuality, whatever the fuck that means in reality...why do you disagree? I'd be interested to know, genuinely.

So what dictionary are youusing? Because there is no standard.
Every dictionary has changed over the years with definitions changing and being updated. So what makes you think yours is correct?
