first off, just want to say that homeschooling CAN be a good experience...and these days it's not true that you just sit home all the time. Nowadays there are things called homeschool co ops...where you go someplace (maybe to someone's house, maybe a community center type place) and meet with other homeschool kids. You can also teach in a co op, so if you know a lot about a specific subject then you can teach it to other kids too. Homeschool has come a LONG way from where it was 20 years ago.

Re: Home schooling

I think there are so many factors when it comes to homeschooling.

In the end, if a home-schooled child is educated and prepared enough to enter college or the work force, then I see no problem with it.

whatever floats someone's boat.

I think it would be a good idea to go into school to develop a fluent social life, however.
Not to say that people who are home schooled don't get around themselves

It takes more than an education to get on in this world.

Agreed... and most of the skills (outside of education) to survive in the real world are seldom learnt within the school system. The Home schooled kids I know are way more rounded, confident individuals than their mainstream schooled counterparts.

Re: Home schooling

I don't believe in Home school because kids who get that are undeveloped socially there fore making it harder for them to adjust to the real world. yes you can do scouts or ymca but its totally different than being in a public school setting.

And there's not socially undeveloped kids who have been in public schools their whole education?

Agreed.

The belief that homeschooled children are socially inept is a stereotype. A few of my life-long friends were homeschooled for part of their lives and were social butterflies. When they entered the public school system around the 8th grade, they assimiliated fine and easily made friends.

On the contrary, merely being present in school doesn't gaurantee that a student will socialize.

Re: Home schooling

yeah I always wonder how home school kids will get to colleges...

You just don't go "That's it, I'm teaching my kids how I want to... when I want to."

There's a lot of criteria that needs to be met(approved by the School board), they still get tested, still need to learn a lot of the same material. They still get a diploma.

Re: Home schooling

Question for everyone... how many of you were actually homeschooled or know people who are/were homeschooled? Because there seems to be a lot of absurd notions going around here on the subject, both in this thread and the other one.

Re: Home schooling

I was homeschooled for quite a few years, probably learn't a lot more academically than being in a classroom full of kids who just wanted to piss about but I was definately stunted when it came to learning social skills.

Spending most of your time at home, being taught by a parent, versus socialization with a large number of kids. It seems pretty obvious exposure to more kids gives you more opportunity to interact and deal with others giving an individual the chance to develop social skills. I realize that parents who home school don't want their kids exposed so they would not care, although it could have an effect when your child has grown up. Not proven just a possibility.

I know several people who were. In my education classes, we covered how they are still held to most of the state requirements for graduation (at least in Florida) plus the pros and cons (along with those of public and private school).
