Haha thanks :) it's the start of a book. I've been trying to write a book since I was 13. It's gone through a lot of changes but I think I have it figured out this time.

Twice, I've written versions that were 200+ pages long. But they both stalled, so although I've still got them, I'm starting over, and I think it might work this time :)

I've been trying and failing at writing my own book for a while now. Every time I get going with one, I find a reason why it sucks and give up.

Aw you guys are the best :D I haven't even written the damn thing and I've already got three fans! Yay!

Yeah that's my problem too, it starts off feeling great but then I get to a certain point and think 'wait, wait... this is actually really shit isn't it?' and give up.

Oooo good luck with that!

My friend wrote a novel and published it herself though I wish she'd sent it to a proper publisher. It kept getting rejected because it had a few plotholes, loose ends and was poorly written but I spent about 2-3 months reading it in detail, correcting her grammar, re-writing poorly phrased sentences/paragraphs and picking up everything I could find that needed correcting and at the end of every chapter, gave a stark reply of what was good and what was rubbish and questioning her. Afterwards, it was a much better novel and I think if she'd sent it again to the publishers, it might have been picked up.

I'd prefer to be published by a proper company as well. I can see why people self-publish, but it feels a little bit like a failure to me, like no one liked your book enough to want to take a chance on it, which kind of says it's not that great.

That's awesome that you did that for your friend, I don't think any of my friends could be brutally honest enough! I'm the same though, I'd want to be kind rather than completely truthful, which is nice but not as helpful.

Yeah I agree and I really think that it was miles better and so it might have been picked up. True, it wasn't the greatest written story of all time but it was better than some of the crap I see published.

I read A LOT and I studied English Language and Literature at college (not at a uni level, they annoyed me enough at college LOL but Matt studies Literature at Uni so any queries I'd just ask him) and so I felt I might as well put my skills to use instead of sitting at home not doing much.

I was cruel but everyone she'd showed it to, was so nice and it wasn't going anywhere. But I didn't just focus on the negatives, I know it took her a long time to write. Every chapter review, I'd give the positives, then the negatives, advice on what to do with all the negatives to make them better, tips for future writing (eg, she didn't know how to properly lay out speech so I had enough of editing it EVERY time. I wrote an essay on what to do then sent her the novel back for her to go through and correct it all as best she could in the remaining chapters. It made the editing a lot quicker) and then an overall summery which included how readers may perceive characters/events etc.

After I finished editing, I gave it back to her to go through again. She made some more changes and then I read it a final time and pretty much wrote her an essay reviewing it a final time. I was as critical and thorough as I could be whilst giving her lots of praise lol

Another interview tomorrow. This one is a bit further out and I need to check out whether I can even get there on a bus on a regular basis.

It's one of those interviews where you applied for it when you were being really proactive and applying for anything you could vaguely be qualified for, but never expected or seriously wanted to get an interview for.

Thanks PD! The good news is, because I didn't really think I'd hear from them and I don't have a great interest in the job, I'm not as nervous as I would be for something I really want haha :)

Good to know you're not as nervous ;)

If i were in your case, be it ANY interview- I always get so nervous. The trick I was told was chew a gum b4 the interview ( of course, gotta remember to throw it out b4 the actual interview :p ) It works :D

Well, 5 minutes before I order a cab to go this interview. I read over the job description last night and realised they'd stuck in at the end that it's only part-time. Even if it's £7 a hour I won't be getting enough to pay the bills.

So this sort of feels a bit pointless now, but I should go anyway just to see what it's like, and at least then I can say I've had some interview practice :)

The temptation to just phone and cancel though is strong, because unless the pay is better than expected then we can't afford it, so this is sort of a waste of time. I could just stay home and go through this mornings paper for jobs instead.

Uuuurgh. No one likes going to interviews, and I'm about to go to one that I can't even accept if I do get offered it!

Why wouldn't you wanna accept it?

Maybe it can serve as a temporary job while waiting for the one you really like :p

That went better than expected :)

The problem now is, I actually quite like the look of it. It's only a small office and the work sounds interesting, even though it's in an area I never would have considered. But, it's only 25 hours. They couldn't give me a definitive answer on what the rate of pay was yet, and if it means I'd earn less than £600 a month then I can't take it :( we can't survive on less.

Still, even if they liked me, the next stage is waiting to hear if I get a second interview.

Is there any opportunity for full time there?

Unclear. He described it as... right now they've reached the point where they need someone new due to their workload, and in the future since the company keeps expanding there'll probably be the chance to go full-time. But there's no way to predict when that could be because it's all based on how much the company grows.

If they can just match what I'm getting on benefits then we should be okay, but it'd have to be about £7.50 an hour and it's hard to say whether that's likely. Small company, but when I asked about the pay he said 'more than what you were getting at your old job'.

Fingers crossed it'll be like £8 an hour :p

It wouldn't hurt imo if you hit 2 birds with one stone, will it ?

Given you said, you might get 600/month- wouldn't that be better than nothing ? At least there's bit of income coming in while you're still applying/waiting for some other jobs offering a full time :dunno

Wouldn't your unemployment benefit pick up the difference from what you would be receiving from this job with how much before? I guess, I am just lost :willy_nilly:

Whatever you finally decide tho' of course is all good :D:thumbup
