Peter Hitchens that is. He is a former atheist and brother to atheist Christopher Hitchens. He spent alot of time in the former Soviet Union as a journalist. He makes some really good points in some of his writings and he is absolutely correct. One point he makes in particular is: "those who reject God's absolute authority, preferring their own, are far more ready to persecute than Christians have been ... Each revolutionary generation reliably repeats the savagery". He cites as examples the French revolutionary terror; the Bolshevik revolution; the Holodomor and the Soviet famine of 1932–33; the barbarity surrounding Joseph Stalin's five year plans, repeated in the Great Leap Forward in China; atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge; and human rights abuses in Cuba under Fidel Castro."

He is absolutely correct here. History shows when atheist governments are in power there is nothing to stop them from committing atrocities. Forget wars they kill their own people!

Peter Hitchens also writes "the biggest fake miracle staged in human history was the claim that the Soviet Union was a new civilisation of equality, peace, love, truth, science and progress. Everyone knows that it was a prison, a slum, a return to primitive barbarism, a kingdom of lies where scientists and doctors feared offending the secret police, and that its elite were corrupt and lived in secret luxury".

Equality, peace, love, truth, science and progress, sound familiar?

Another quote by Hitchens is:"Left to himself, Man can in a matter of minutes justify the incineration of populated cities; the deportation, slaughter, disease and starvation of inconvenient people and the mass murder of the unborn. I have heard people who believe themselves to be good, defend all these things, and convince themselves as well as others. Quite often the same people will condemn similar actions committed by different countries, often with great vigour. For a moral code to be effective, it must be attributed to, and vested in, a non-human source. It must be beyond the power of humanity to change it to suit itself."

Correct again. When it comes to his brother Peter writes: " I am also baffled and frustrated by the strange insistence of my anti-theist brother that the cruelty of Communist anti-theist regimes does not reflect badly on his case and on his cause. It unquestionably does. Soviet Communism is organically linked to atheism, materialist rationalism and most of the other causes the new atheists support. It used the same language, treasured the same hopes and appealed to the same constituency as atheism does today. When its crimes were still unknown, or concealed, it attracted the support of the liberal intelligentsia who were then, and are even more now, opposed to religion."

All excellent points that show striking similarities between new atheism and past genocidal atheist regimes.

That viewpoint is a little extreme for my taste but it is food for thought. I've never realized the similarities that are there.

Exactly what did the US government do to the heathen US native indian during the 1800's?

Let's not forget about the "church" itself and how religious organizations were used to control people prior to the industrial revolution.

That was the US government, duh.

I think the miltant atheists need to take it down a notch or three. They sure are starting to sound like those commies.

Don't forget atheist Polpot. He had people brutally tortured to get a signed confession and then he killed them by the truck loads.

That is true. The US wanted the land but atheist Stalin killed anyone who didn't agree with him.

I could be wrong, but the US government killed a bunch of innocent native indians. However, because they were "heathens" I have little doubt that most "christians" didn't care at the time.

Then again, perhaps Christians have a different master called capitalism. Yeah, we went to the sand box for war due to weapons of mass destruction and terrorist. Exactly how much money can't be accounted for? But then again, we don't live under a ruthless dictator, so everything is honkey dory:thumbup

History teaches the US Government wanted the land. Being Christian had nothing to do with it. What does that have to do with atheists regimes killing off anyone who disagreed with them? How about staying on topic.

Back to the topic. I guess it is easy for atheist regimes to slaughter other human beings because they have no moral base.

In a round about way, I am on topic, just that some of you are perhaps too narrow minded to realize it.

You guys are forgetting about the socio/economic/government background of the country in question which allowed the ruthless moral less regime to gain power in the first place.

Talk about the Soviet Union? You realize Czar Nicholas wasn't exactly "people friendly"? Why do you think the French revolution took place?

AND, you want to talk about power and control and how ruthless people can be to keep power? All you need to do is look towards the church centuries ago. People for some reason tend to forget that the church, for the most part, was a means by which people could control other people, and yes, the church did KILL people "in the name of their God" to keep that power.

It has been proven that more deaths have been attributed to Christians than any other group bar none.

History does reflect that regimes like that of Stalin, Polpot,etc... were particularly more brutal than any in history. Human life seemed to have no value at all.

Blah, blah, blah. Nice lie Tim.

By chance are you in grade school?

Massacre of Verden, look it up if you know how.

That is one I can easily think of (interesting time in history for myself). Have no doubt you could find hundreds, if not thousands if if you looked.

None of those guys came close to the destruction caused by "your god"

Did any of them flood the entire earth killing almost every living thing on the planet? That includes women, children and infants... all of which were innocent.

How about your god killing all of the first born?

The total destruction of two cities with fire and brimstone?

What about the second coming where billions will be destroyed, blood will run in the streets chest deep?
