This has always been my stance. I think Americans should have the right to bear arms and I support that right.

But let me propose this situation to you all. You have a child in the house, so you take every safety precaution so you have the trigger lock, storage box or whatever. A criminal breaks into your house. While your fumbling around trying to unlock/unsafety your gun, your too late and he murders your child/family, whatever.

The other thing I'd like to point out is that humans are error prone, the only thing we can do is to minimize the margin for error as much as possible. But this is not 100%. Why in the world would you want to take a chance, even if it were 1 in 1,000,000 that your child could possible be injured/killed because they found your weapon?

You can claim to be the "safest" person in the world with your weapon, and that it would never happen to "you", but I'm sure those people that this happened to thought the same thing. Don't become so full of yourself that you lose sight at what is really important.

Besides, there's only a handful of you, if that even, that would be able to hit the target if a gun were pointed at you in the split second it would take. Go ahead, argue that since I'm sure all of you have been presented with this situation.

I'd also like to add, I am not a supporter of banning guns. I am a huge supporter of common sense though.

to OP:
i think the gun laws (in california anyways) should be loosened a bit.
i have a lot of guns. all of which are in a safe except for two.
my mossberg 500 12ga. that thing is cocked and locked at all times ready for action. first round is rock salt, following 5 rounds are buckshot. my other gun that is not locked up is a colt defender .45... which i actually carry on my person in my house. lol. the only time its not on me is when im sleeping. thats when the shotgun comes in handy. staring down the barrel of a shotgun is a whole lot scarier than looking at a compact pistol.

i have no small children at my house... EVER. not even my neice. mainly because i dont want her around my friends. they are not good people and i dont want my neice to be directly exposed to our actions. and even though i dont have any kids at my house ever, i still keep the rest of my guns in a nice sentry gun safe. i keep my shotgun cocked at all times because the first round is merely rock salt. all it does is hurt you, it wont kill you. if someone were to get ahold of it and shoots me, well i always have my defender on me in my house. so while i have stinging salt in my skin, they have hollow points flying at them.

I'm not even a US citizen an I own a gun here. For me it's more about home protection. I want the ability to do something if a person were to invade my home. Coming here from a much less populated country, and a country that has banned firearms (expect single shot rifles), I'm a little shook up with the crime rate and types of crimes around here. We have a large gang presence here in the DC area. Mostly Latino gangs. I'm not used to this and it scares me a little.

So I own a gun. I own a .40 handgun. I keep it in my draw besides my bed. Not very safe I'm sure you're thinking, and you're right. I own a gun for the main purpose of killing someone. I do not know when I will kill this person, nor what the circumstances will be. Therefor I keep the gun close and ready to go. I have often thought about my 3 year old son getting a hold of my gun, but for now it's not so much of a problem. I'm not worried because I don't keep a round loaded in the chamber, and my son isn't strong enough to pull the slide back to load it. Nor do I think he's even seen someone pull the slide back, but neither here nor there. The guns not loaded, and he can't physically load it.

Now when my son gets older, I'm going to be introducing him to shooting and educating him about all aspects of firearms. Also I'll have to invest in a quick release safe to install in my bedside draw.

Now this is the part where I may come across as a prick. But it is how I feel. It does suck that kids die from firearms. I wish it didn't happen. But it does, and will continue as long as there are firearms for these kids to get a hold of. But kids also die from consuming household chemicals, hit by vehicles, falling, and just about everything. There is no answer for how to stop this. You can't. You can only watch your own child and make sure they are safe.
