Gov't Willing to say "sorry"

Govt willing to say 'sorry' in apology

Tuesday Jan 15 19:23 AEDT
The federal government will use the word sorry when apologising to the stolen generation.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has told The Bulletin magazine she is confident a flood of compensation claims will not follow the apology to indigenous Australians.
"The main reason for that if you look at experience over the last 10 years, the states and the territory have all apologised and you don't see a rush of claims against them," she said.

Argh This annoys me, Saying Sorry is going to make everything that was done to the "stolen generation" Better? Im sick of political idiots thinking a simple 5 letter word is going to change things and make things alright! :mad

The Stolen Generation (or Stolen Generations) is a term used to describe the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, usually of mixed descent who were removed from their families by Australian government agencies and church missions, under various state acts of parliament, denying the rights of parents and making all Aboriginal children wards of the state, between approximately 1869 and (officially) 1969. The policy typically involved the removal of children into internment camps, orphanages and other institutions.[1] The Stolen Generation has received significant public attention in Australia following the publication in 1997 of Bringing Them Home - Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families.[2] Questions regarding whether the Stolen Generation actually occurred or to what scale it occurred, remain controversial topics within Australian political discourse

The Stolen Generation

i hear what you are saying dude but in the same sense because of the stolen generation everything slowly went downhill from there, and these days if something happens guess who gets the first blame?
I society that was once considered the most respected, for doing what they could to live off the land that they resided, is now the top of the criminal list in most states, even to the point i heard a news story not long ago about the Northern Territory banning certain aboriginal groups from drinking... if that isnt discrimination i dont know what is.
TO me Sorry just does not justify what all those families went through and the Australian Government should be discgusted in themselves for even thinking that it would do the smallest amount of justice :(

Oh, I agree, the way the Aboriginals have been treated is something which has been hushed up far to much, Aboriginals have a life expectancy over 20 years less that white Australians. That is disgraceful from a Western country. John Howard is such a racist cunt though that he wouldn't even apollogise for the wrong doings against the native population. I'm just pleased that Kevin Rudd is taking a step in the right direction. You're right though, there is a lot to be done to right these terrible crimes!

Here's hoping they can do more than what they need to and without being told how to go about it, there is always going to be resentment held for the government from the Aboriginal Community and i think they have all right to hold said resentment

Too little too late. This should have happened long ago. Now it means nothing. I'm not apart of that apology, as I wasn't apart of those who committed the heinous act. I have the utmost sympathy for those effected.

And the Aborigines need to pull themselves out of the mess they're currently in. They have been given a lot of land back, god knows how much money in customized welfare, and they still continue to act like dipshits. The amount of alcoholics in the aboriginal communities are disgusting. And they wont do anything for themselves because they just want to get drunk and complain about how their people were treated long ago. I have aboriginal family. Some are just like these, and some are doing well for themselves. They all came out of the same lifestyles, and the reason my uncle Steve and aunty Jo-Anne are doing well is because they got off their ass and made a change in their life.
