I don't see why. Being disrespectful is booing, flipping the bird and burning flags ect. Sitting as far as I know is never disrespectful at most other times so I don't see why it should be here. I fail to see why I should show some sort of symbol of respect to another country anyway, I won't show what is widely regarded as disrespect for their anthem, here. If their customs find me sitting during their anthem disrespectful, tough shit as far as I'm concerned, I couldn't care less, it makes no difference to me!:smiley24:

But is standing really so difficult? It's not. It's an easy thing you can do to acknowledge the struggle and sacrifice each country has had to make.

I would stand for your anthem, Peter.

No, standing isn't difficult, but my culture says it's not rude if I don't stand for another anthem so I'll exercise my right not to. What has standing got to do with struggle and sacrifice?:confused Up to you if you want to stand for my anthem, it wouldn't bother me either way though I would find it slightly strange standing for something which has no real meaning for you.

It's about recognition. Showing to those people who are loyal to that country, that you can appreciate their coming together to form some sort of union.

What? Are you making this up on the spot?

So I should stand so I can show them that I appreciate that they're a country? :willy_nilly:

I think it's common courtesy to stand at an event while anyone's national anthem is playing. What's the hurt anyways? Not that you can't sit afterwards and it's not that long anyways. If you are wheelchair bound that is another matter. There's no reason why you would be expected to sing another's national anthem tho, in any case more likely you would not know the words.

I don't understand what you are getting at as I've already answered what I think is respectful behavior and what is not for myself. Bottom line is I would not be one of the people sitting down.

There's a difference between what is disrespectful, and why it's disrespectful. You said what, I asked why...

What's the hurt in staying seated? :)

The reason I choose to stand has to do with my morals, values, what I believe in, and how I was raised. Going into detail about all of those things would take too long to type out.

So I'll give an example which of course will not encompass everything but will give you the general gist of where I am coming from.

Example, when my kids are playing football and a child on the other team gets hurt, we all 'take a knee'. That kid is not on our team, but the kid is still a human being so we 'take a knee' out of kindness, common courtesy, and respect for human life. Once he is back up and ready to play, we are back to kicking their butts all over the field ... LOL! :)

That's cool you told my why you like to stand. I even like your example. When i played rugby, we would cheer when a guy was taken off the field in a stretcher. Not cheering for what happened to him, rather cheering for him being brave.

Problem is, is that I asked why is it disrespectful to stay seated, and not why you stand. I'm all for people doing what they want, and hey, if you americans what to stand during Advance Australia Fair, then go right ahead.

Just a miscommunication :)

It would be disrespectful for me to stay seated because it would mean the opposite of what I stated previously as to why I'd be standing/'taking a knee'. So instead of showing respect for the guy laying there on the field hurt, I'd be ignoring him basically and not caring whether he were hurt or not ... I'd be talking to someone, getting something to drink, etc. By not 'taking a knee' with everyone else would show that I could care less about where everyone's focus was and that my focus was not united with theirs on the child that was hurt. Again though, this is because of my culture, upbringing, morals, etc. Someone that was not raised the same way or in the same culture obviously may not relate to it the same way, which is why I stated that I could only choose for myself. :)

im not patriotic, and i hate our national anthem ,however i do stand ,out of politeness and common courtesy.its like talking with your gob full ,its rude.
i also feel that we in all countries are now faced with ever increasing numbers of service men who have risked their lives for what i consider an illegal war, however they have done that and i wouldnt under those circumstances show any such disrespect to those people.
