Last night I was at WalMart in the check out and there was a family of 5 (they were Hispanics) in front of me checking out with a basketfull of groceries. The mom, dad, and 3 kids were dressed exceptionally nice. The mom even had on a fur coat and was talking on the cell phone (none of which I could understand, it was in spanish). Anyways, the cashier told them their total price and I seen her pull out a food stamp card and she swiped it thru the card reader. (I guess food stamp reciepents are allowed so much a month to spend on groceries?) Because after she used the card, the cashier told her her remaining balance. When at that point, she pulled out an envelope and pulled out a wad of 100 dollar bills.
This is what I dont understand. The family could afford to dress exceptionally well, have a wad of 100 dollar bills but still gets approved for food stamps. Am I missing something here?

You see that a lot around here. Guess you just have to lie to get them to issue them to you. I know people who really need the help and can't get it due to being honest.

Wow, this is a topic that really makes my stomach churn!

We see this all the time here in Floriduh. Quite simply, They are liars.
They lie about their marital status, the old man works a job under the table. Typically construction, farm hand, that type of job, So there's no way to trace an income.

The woman claims that she's all alone with a house full of kids, and the mister has abandoned her. So they wind up with a lot more than just food stamps.
They are also getting welfare checks, WIC (free milk, juice, eggs, cheese, etc)
and Medicaid, OMG, Here comes the rant...... scroll if you want to read it. I'll space it down in case you don't.

When my baby was in the hospital the entire NICU was crawling with them, They come over here to have their babies because our hospitals CAN'T turn them away, and once the baby is born they are entitled to WIC, Medicaid, welfare, etc. (The baby is a U.S. citizen because it was born on U.S. soil. Doesn't matter if the parents are illegals.)

Now,, think about this. I got the bills from All Children's hospital. ONE day in the NICU (that's the neonatal intensive care unit) cost $17,000.00 that's just the hospital stay alone. Not including any surgeries or special medicines that are needed, and with a preemie there's always special needs!
I was one of the few parents with a child in the NICU who was, 1.) an American citizen and 2.) had medical insurance.

What that means to you?
The average stay for a preemie in the NICU is a week. That's for a baby who isn't all that premature, maybe a couple weeks.
So for the sake of averages, multiply 17K X 7 days that's $119,000.00 dollars.
Now imagine a NICU with 4 bays and each bay has 60 beds, or isolettes, that's $28,586,000.00. Granted, some of those will be insured so that cost doesn't count. However, I was there for 7 months since my son was so extremely premature and I can tell you this as a first hand witness. More than 80% of the hospitals patients were illegals, or at least 'undocumented' as the term goes.
I know this because several of the nurses vented to me about the subject because they feel completely overwhelmed! They even have to try to translate complicated medical information to them too because most of them wont even attempt to learn some english. Then the people demand a free car seat from the hospital too, because some how the word got out that if you can't afford a car seat when your baby leaves the hospital one will be provided for you free, because the hospital can't discharge a baby without confirming that the baby will be going home safely. So now they all of the sudden know enough English to say "Where's my car seat?"

Where am I going with all this?! Well Guess who is paying that 28 million+ a week bill?
WE ARE! Medicaid and WIC are taken right from the taxes that we all work hard and pay by law. And this is just one hospital in one city. Now think about all the children's hospitals in the United States. There are TONS of them, thank god!

And each and every day in each and every city in America there are people who are literally fleecing the hard earned tax dollars through their lies and illegal status!

I probably sound like a racist. But this really isn't about race. It's about a group of people who are intentionally and purposely abusing the social programs that this country has in place to be humane to it's citizens.

The thing that pisses me off the most about all this is I witnessed young, really young parents be DENIED assistance because they made too much money because one of them had a minimum wage job?!!! (These were kids who had a baby way too young, now what's going to happen to them and that baby? In debt for the rest of their lives trying to pay a hospital bill? )

When the "new deal" came about and the assistance programs were developed no one ever thought that this could happen.

You're darn tootin' I am out raged! Every single hard working person in this country should be. We are being robbed. Each and every day.

i work as a cashier in a grocery store, and around my area, most of the people who use food stamps do honestly need them. Most people who apply for food stamps and are better off are either lying about their income, or get little, if any money each month for food.

the only thing I am very strictly against is people who use their food stamps to buy nothing but shit. I cant stand ringing up a ton of junk food for people using food stamps, it makes me very angry that people can get government aid and then use it to buy food with little to no nutritional value. luckily food stamps cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cigs, or things like energy drinks that are terrible for you.

I'm glad you're a cashier who sticks to the rules.

I hope most do. I have read about some convenience store owners around here who were caught allowing people to use their food stamps as straight currency. (Ex: buy gas, cigs, what ever.) One store owner actually said "It doesn't matter to me, I get reimbursed for the cash price anyway."

I don't know the details on how he could be getting reimbursed for purchases other than food, but I can presume that the government isn't very strict with the inventory processes, Also I wondered why anyone would do their shopping at a convenience store since the food prices in those places are always way higher than a regular grocery store. Even if you're on food stamps, wouldn't you want your food stamp dollars to stretch? Seems a bit dodgy that anyone would use the food stamps in a convenience store for anything more than like a late night purchase of milk, or some isolated items that you would normally shop in a convenience store for.
I mean come on? Who does their weekly food shopping in a convenience store? Anyone? Anyone? .... Bueller?

I've known of a handful of people like this. In their case, it is because they obtain their money through illegal services and obviously don't declare it as income. e.g. Drug dealers, pimps, chop shoppers, etc.

You do need to put things into perspective and you have to account for where you live....

First lets look at some numbers... There are 25 times as many babies born in the US to legal US citizens than to Undocumented ones. That means for every hospital that are "overrun" with illegals, then there are at least 25 that are not. This goes to your location and not a system wide problem. There are approximately 170,000 children born in the US each year to undocumented citizens. While there are well over 4 million born to US citizens.

Now while we can't say "Fuck you" to a women in labor, we also cannot let the system be taken advantage of. You are going to get "leaches" in any program, there is no way to avoid that. But we do have a lot of people who truly benefit and would be severely disadvantaged if these programs were to just go away...

Children do need to be protected, it doesn't matter who their parents are, we need to make sure they are fed and well. It's the price we pay for being civilized. This is also the reason we don't throw our children out into the streets if they are not perfect when they are born. Because we are civilized...

Hell, I could go on forever about this... but my basic stand is... fix the damn system, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

You can thank the lovely liberals/democrats for programs like these :)

You can thank us for almost every major social advance and progress in the last century, actually.

So why haven't the Republicans tried to fix it while they were in complete power over the past 12 years??? Seems to me that they had a chance to do something and didn't... so don't blame the Dems :)

Yep, I can thank you for the rise in my taxes at an astronomical rate to pay for all this BS.

I never said the Repubs were any better. I don't like either of them. No one has a fix to the solution, but throwing more money at it without revamping the system does nothing for it and you know that.

I believe in social programs to help people and I don't mind my taxes being used for them. I realize that some of my taxes are going to people that lie. But it is worth it for the ones that are not lying and truly need a hand up.

It's just a matter of fixing the programs we have so more money makes it to those who truly need it.

We shouldn't even need government programs that hand out money. If we stop sending jobs overseas, letting illegals work here, etc, everyone would have a job and wouldn't need handouts. Of course, they need to raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour or something, but who cares? I would rather pay $7 for a cheeseburger to pay someone's salary then to pay the government in taxes who use the money for gosh knows what.

I'm not saying this applies for everyone on the system but it applies to a lot of people...they are too fucking lazy to get a job period...this country has gotten really lazy and its work ethics have gone down....that is why a lot of illigals get jobs not just because they will work for less but they will work and work their asses off...they will do work that a lot of americans wont do because they are too lazy or too proud....

People who cheat benefits make me sick because not only are they cheating working people out of their hard earned money in taxes they are increasing the stigma attached to genuine people who really do need the money. Because of all the hype about it genuinely needy people over here are finding it harder and harder to get benefits they are entitled to as the government makes it harder and harder to claim benefits in response to the public shouting for something to be done about these cheats. Greed is an ugly thing!:(

I know a couple years ago when my husband was laid off from his job that he was at for 8 yrs, it was just me working to support 3 kids and him and I. Plus, house payments, car payments, all the bills etc. He got denied for unemployment too. It was extremely hard but we made it. Without the help of food stamps, or any government help. Granted, we had to make ALOT of sacrifices too and penny pinch, but we just proved to ourselves that it can be done.

I disagree. People don't like being in poverty, and the old excuse of "they're poor because they are lazy" is ridiculous. Are there people that won't work because they are just social leeches? YES. BUT, to say the majority of them are in poverty because of that reasons would be fallacious. There are so many social and societal reasons as to why people are poor, and why a lot of those reasons are out of their hands, it would take me hours to explain all of them.
