This question has many answers and they are all matter of opinion.
I'm curious to see what people will answer and before you all get into a debate about each others answers think clearly of your response. I'll tell you my initial answer after a few people have posted. I suggest posting it as a spoiler because I want honest answers not answers fed off of other replies.

The question has two parts:
What do you believe is the greatest invention that has benefit humanity within the last 300 years, and why?

This is the first part of the question. I'll ask the second part in rep

The Refrigerator.

Let's face it, food spoils and nobody wants to preserve food like they did back in the day. Everyone needs to eat, so the refrigerator was what I decided on.

The telephone. I believe it aided humanity by enabling us to have greater communication to the outside world. And look how it's evolved, with cordless phones, then mobile phones.

Ok... now explain why you believe porography has helped humanity
Well, if you think about it pornography has given the lonely man and woman who's down on their luck in the romance department a release outlet for their tension. Sure they can get off without it but it stimulates the mind more. :ninja

The light bulb.

I was going to say electricity, but you can't invent electricity. But you can use it.
With the invention of artificial lighting, you can dramatically increase the length of the work day, you can decrease crime and you can bring light into otherwise dark corners of the world.

OK, I'll try again, the sewage system because things would have been extremely messy, smelly and disease ridden without it
