How do we know that by raising the temperature, we aren't putting off another ice age???

By that logic, our CO2 emissions wouldn't matter then, right? Cuz the earth would just cool itself off???
They do matter, because the more we pump into the atmosphere the more violent the reaction. They are not joking about major cities being under several feet of water guys...

their are people a hell of a lot smarter than me figuring this out and some of them believe that its bullshit while others believe its a problem both sides brings facts to the table so its hard to say whos right and whos wrong...I think its just another way of trying to get you to buy more expesive things just because they are enviromental friendly and not just that but raise prices/taxes to put more coin in their pocket because they say its for the good of the planet....make me rich and the planet will get better...thats all it is plain and simple cut and dry...I know we haven't been great to this planet but do you have any idea how long it would take for us to fuck it up that bad to the point of no return...

Name some people a hell of a lot smarter than you that bring facts to the table when say global warming is not a problem. I'm very interested in seeing who you name. Like I said before, out of a sample of 900 scientific papers, 900 of them disagreed with what you are claiming.

Twenty-five years ago, the eco-nuts were fussing about how another ice age was coming. Remember that? Today it's the opposite problem; the ice caps are about to melt and we're all going to be drowned. Conveniently, the cause of this coming disaster is the energy industry. To support this idea the rest of the eco-nut fringe present us with the following « reasoning »:
1) The earth is warming up;
2) Man-made emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, are the cause;
3) This global warming will have a disastrous effect on the future of Mankind and the planet on the whole;
4) The Kyoto Protocol, forcing developed nations to cut back on carbon emissions, will save us from this disaster.
All four of these claims are false. Let's take them in turn:
 • Claim: The earth is warming.
 • Fact: The global temperature reached its modern peak about 1940 and declined somewhat in the following decade. It has not changed significantly in the last fifty years although there has been considerable variation from year to year, largely due to the El Niño phenomenon.
 • Claim: The cause of warming is man-made increases in atmospheric CO2.
 • Fact: The cause of global temperature change is – wait for this – changes in the amount of radiation emitted by the sun. Should this surprise anyone? It is intuitively obvious and was first verified scientifically more than a hundred years ago.
 • Claim: This warming will cause global disaster.
 • Fact: A somewhat higher global temperature would be beneficial. Since the end of the last Ice Age, the global temperature has usually been higher than it is today. A long high plateau occurred between 8000 BC and 4000 BC. This period is called the Neolithic Climatic Optimum, not the Neolithic Climatic Disaster. Another shorter rise around 1000 AD has a similar name: the Medieval Climatic Optimum. Global temperatures were at a minimum between 1300 AD and 1650 AD. This period is called the Little Ice Age. To put it simply: Heat good. Cold bad. Can any Canadian really doubt this?
 • Claim: Kyoto will save us all.
 • Fact: Even if fully implemented, Kyoto will have a minimal effect on atmospheric accumulations of carbon dioxide. According to the exact same climate models which supposedly prove that the earth is heating up due to CO2 emissions are the cause, Kyoto would not change things by more than 0.1ºC over the next century, an insignificant amount.

Here is the data supplied by NASA. This disproves your above statement. You can see that the peak is NOT in 1940

Times Online said:
"The debate about whether there is a global warming signal now is over, at least for rational people," said Tim Barnett, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. "The models got it right. If a politician stands up and says the uncertainty is too great to believe these models, that is no longer tenable."

There are many more scientific studies that back this. This is just the latest study to come out. As a side note, this study was funded by our government and not some environmental wacko's

A degree or two difference is all it takes to start melting the polar ice caps and glaciers around the world. So what you say? Well it is these ice caps that help regulate the temperature of the earth. They reflect over 90% of the suns energy back into space keeping us cooler. If these ice caps recede it will open up more water and land surface that will absorb more energy from the sun speeding up the warming process. Once it starts, it will snowball quickly melting even more of the ice and opening up more water and land to absorb heat that is typically reflected back into space.
The oceans currents will also be greatly impacted by this change. Ocean currents are what disburse the warmth from the equator and the cold from the poles evenly across the globe. If we were to stop the ocean currents today, the equator would be too hot to live at and there would be glaciers covering all of Canada and some of the Northern US. There would be a very small band of livable climate for all the earth to occupy. On a side note, if the ice sheet of Greenland were to melt, the fresh water mixing into the Ocean would be enough to stop the ocean currents. It would dilute the salt water and prevent the cold water from sinking and circulating to the equator.

In short, a mild global warming would be the trigger for the next ice age as the ice caps melt. This is what the scientists fear, not a few degrees of temp increase.

This I agree with. Kyoto is nothing more than a starting point, and I don't think it's enough. There are a lot of things that we can do, but understanding what is truly going on and taking the politics out of it will be a major step. It's something we need to do without destroying us economically in the process. But we have to start listening to the science. We have to start someplace, if we continue to do nothing, then we are only making it harder if not impossible for future generations. WE ARE NOT SAVING THE PLANET! The planet will be just fine with or without us. These are things that go directly to impacting our survival.

Um, Uncle, did you read my post? With gradual increases in temperature (global warming), the earth reacts naturally with cold weather to cool itself down. Remember, there was a mini ice age in the 1600's all the way up to the early 19th century that also triggered the plague that hit Europe.

i dont see how we can justify bad habits, pollution, etc., even if we might not be doing as much damage as we think (which we def are), the fact that we try to justify doing stupid things without knowing what its doing (even though we do, but we ask for 100% proof, like a letter from mother nature or something,lol), is just crazy.

I agree. We are so wasteful and out life styles deplete so much natural resources its just plain unethical. We're basically helping kill our future children.

Wow... Those of you who think global warming isn't 'real' or is not an issue are very misinformed. I can give you facts if you'd like? Do you realize that out of 900 scientific papers written on global warming, the number of papers that concluded global warming did exists = 900. The media is the ONLY reason that people believe global warming is not an issue. I used to think this way after reading all the crap that was published. Then I decided to dig into the issue myself and take an un-biased look at it. (Remember, going into this i was against the thought of global warming). I soon realized the trouble we are in. Maybe not in our generation, but those to come soon. It took thousands of years for the population to reach 2 billion people. In our parents lifetime the population will have went from 2 billion to over 10 billion. Along with this the pollution increases. With increased pollution, the amount of CO2 in the air increases. With an increase in CO2 in the air, the temperature rises. When the temperature rises, ice melts. When ice melts the oceans rise. When the oceans rise, land becomes submerged. When land becomes submerged, people are displaced and die. Humans will kill themselves off. It's almost and un-arguable fact.
My thoughts exactly. I didn't feel like arguing about if it is real or not, because honestly, the opinion of hundreds of scientists from all over the world should be enough. Thank you for posting it anyway :)
