Employee fired over facebook

This isn't the first time I've heard of employees being fired because of what happens on Facebook. I've also heard of employees being fired because of the sort of photo's that were found on their profile. Managers are starting to scan their employees profiles and also checking it for new applicants.

It seems that companies are having more say over what their employees can do while you are not on the job and may even affect your chance of being hired.

Personally, I have a problem with the direction things seem to be going regarding online activity. Employee's should not be fired for how they spend their personal time online or offline IMO. Essentially because of how you spend your time offline can cause you to be terminated because photo's will often end up online.

Whats your take on it?
 
I could understand if you had your employer's name on your profile page- a lot of people do. If you have their name, you're representing them. I see nothing wrong with want to project a certain image for your company. However, I think people should not just be fired; they should be given the opportunity to rectify things and then it should go from there.
 
Oh lemme tell you about an incident that happened at my work with one of my co-workers just last week! Her and her husband both work in the ER. She is a secretary and he is an EMT. Well apparently she was pissed because he was refused a pay raise and all the new EMTs are starting out making what he is currently making even though he has been there @ 5 yrs or so.
Well she made a comment about it on her Facebook stating that St Josephs is stupid and if they dont give her husband a pay raise then he is gonna walk, etc. Well alot of her friends on her friends list are co-workers of ours.
Someone (we havent figured it out yet) printed up her comment and stuck it under the ER Directors door!!
Needless to say, she is now on a 90 day probation. She almost damn near lost her job because of a Facebook comment!!

People should at least be given the chance to rectify things. I definitely agree with that.

Well shame on her for sharing her profile with co-workers. What a screwed up situation though. 3 month suspension is a little harsh, just as firing her would have been as well. It was a bit unnecessary to show the comment to her employer.

I have made my profiles private except to my friends to try and keep any of these situations from happening to me and I won't allow for co-workers to friend me either.

They were dumb enough to post them with the date and what they did all day (without kids)

If your too sick to be at work, because the monitor hurts your eyes, you shouldn't ne on the computer at home then... sorta dumb.

a co-worker stumbled accorss her activity and then her employer took it from there, is this any different from a co-worker seeing her in the mall, perhaps photographing her and providing proof to the employer, all sneaky and underhand but liars are often found out by underhand means

my take is she would have sooner or later lost her job through her deceit anyways, the means in which it happened is not that important

No, before employers didn't attempt to follow employees around or check on them at home. This is bringing about distrust between employees and employers.

They didn't use it to spy, they were notified by someone she was friends with on that (or am I crossing stories?)... I've a few people from work on my FB also, including my manager... I never write anything about work on it aside from "hope I have a good day'.

I never accept friend invites from people I don't know.

I'm not referring to this story specifically, just using it as an example for a recent trend.

They bleeding did! Remember when I was off sick about 10 years ago and my boss went into where my sister works and started grilling her, trying to catch me out.:thumbdown

This is the first time I've heard of this sort of incident. Perhaps it happens on occasion, but situations relating to facebook are happening more often than ever.

I am not familiar with what you reference but can I guess there was an extended period of time you were off work? If so there is nothing unusual to verify under those circumstances.


Nope, just a day, the guy was a bleeding cunt. Thats what laws are like, they might be in place but bosses can pretty much get away with doing as they please unless there's a union to oppose them.

I have a big problem with this. What anyone does in their private time, is their business, even if they are faking sick. The only time I would support a company firing an employee for the contents or usage of FaceBook is if an employee placing defaming information about the company or accesses it against policy while during working hours.

Otherwise, our private lives are just that...private.

I caution all young people I know, keep their page private. Don't post pictures they wouldn't want to see on a billboard.
