i think it's bullshit. What i do on my own time is none of an employers business, unless it's illegal.

I have a big problem with this. What anyone does in their private time, is their business, even if they are faking sick. The only time I would support a company firing an employee for the contents or usage of FaceBook is if an employee placing defaming information about the company or accesses it against policy while during working hours.

Otherwise, our private lives are just that...private.

I caution all young people I know, keep their page private. Don't post pictures they wouldn't want to see on a billboard.
Using sick time when you're not sick is fiduciary theft, if I'm not mistaken.

I still saay they can't legally give them the boot over Facebook.
Sure they can...just gotta make sure they have all their ducks in a row. ;) You'd be surprised how many contracts have "morality clauses" in them!!!

Nope, just a day, the guy was a bleeding cunt. Thats what laws are like, they might be in place but bosses can pretty much get away with doing as they please unless there's a union to oppose them.

I remember reading in my Union newsletter that an employer tried a similar thing here. He got into A LOT of trouble for it. Harassing employees like that is unacceptable behavior.

ridiculous to me. People rant about their jobs daily.

Yes, that's true.

The reason why people get fired or disciplined for this sort of stuff isn't because their managers don't like them having a rant to their mates (everyone does it). However, doing it online, where everyone can see, can go long lengths to affect the public's perception of their employer.

For example, the management of a company like Ikea, would want the public to perceive the organisation as innovative, intelligent, helpful and courteous (none of which is true), and they'll go to great lengths to instill this perception on the public. Obviously an employee of the company posting on their Facebook/whatever saying 'OMG I HATE ALL THE SMELLY PEOPLE THAT I HAD TO SERVE EVERYDAY', hurts the company's image, so they'll do their utmost to out stamp this type of behavior.

A viewpoint that I understand but completely disagree with.

In Germany it wouldn't (normally) be possible to fire someone because of such things. (good dismissals protection here in Germany - at least as you aren't a temporary worker..).

But I often heard of job candidates (especially ex-students) who were scanned and often found at "studi.vz" (it's a virtual place for students) and then got a refusal because of party pictures and other discreditating stuff.

Imho it's everyone's own fault: I, for my part, would never hawk with my real name on the internet. And if I'd do I'd really pay much attention on what I say/write/show.

And although I don't like that employers today are going to spy on their employees I can understand the reason for this up to a certain extent.

You're missing the point...she called in sick saying she had to be away from a computer monitor...then she got on Facebook (on a computer) and posted. It has nothing to do w/ what she said!!!
