I need something to make decisions on...although dare I even look to see how much a 400D is?

I can not tell ya which lens are best as far as light. It is not a guessing game though. You can determine it by the specs but I do not know how to interpret. It costs more money though for lens that require less light if I am not mistaken.

People have mentioned some fine brands and cameras so far.

One thing I'll just throw out there is that if size and weight is important as you mentioned but you still want the versatility of a DSLR- it may be worth considering the micro 'four-thirds' system.

The way they get it light and so on is by removing the mirror and prism in normal dslrs as in this pic:

...and by using a slightly smaller sensor as can be seen from this pic:



However, it's still far bigger than the really tiny point and shoot sensors you can see in that same pic.

I own a Sony A700 - not a micro four thirds. Just suggesting in case of size and weight.

With that being said - one thing I forgot to mention is that the micro four thirds may not be good given your other criteria of low light shooting. Not having experience of one, I've no idea how good or acceptable they may be in such conditions but they do of course have smaller sensors so less light gets in.

They have a really nice fixed one of those for Nikon's. It's fixed so, while you can't zoom in and out, you get the most light in--and in quickly. I think it was like an f1.4-1.8 35mm or something like that. I plan on buying one--eventually.

OK, I've got some time so I'll tell you a bit about my camera. I have a Nikon D40 and it's probably about as basic as a DSLR will get. I didn't really want a fancy shmancy one, though. I just wanted to be able to control the shutter release and aperture settings so that I could take pics of the Northern lights and I also wanted to take nice action shots at hockey games. I have the 18-55mm kit lens as well as a 55-200mm zoom lens that I bought later and I've found that those have worked well for me. Here are a few pics that I've taken with it. I think they're all with the kit lens. None of them were taken with a tripod because I'm too lazy to cart one around. :ninja

Ok, this pic isn't the best. It's shakey because I didn't use a tripod but the northern lights are spectacular. It's the only pic I have of northern lights because this was the only opportunity I've had to take pics since I got this camera.

That's just a sampling of what I've shot with a D40. I'm not the best photographer by any stretch and I know I haven't realized the full potential of this camera. It's worked well for me as one who likes to dabble and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Hellz yes! Although, I think the postal services stopped accepted horses in like 1887 or something like that... You would have to fly him through the air port.

Janie you didn't mention what Canon lens(s) you already own. Shame on you. Maybe you did but I stopped reading once I saw a pile of shitty advice. In any event if they are compatible with Canons digital bodies you need to take a serious look at this one.

B & H Photo is the largest camera store in the US and have excellent service to back them up. Many folks I associate with on line in Canada deal with them all the time. Notice the free shipping deal they have going now.

Now about a kit lens. Stay away from them, far far away. Check what you have and if they work you're half way there. To change brands would be a big mistake in my opinion.

Here's a review on the 50D....... which I own and love btw. Excellent high ISO capabilities so shooting a night should be a pleasure for you. Beats the hell out of the 30D & 40D which I owned and loved prior to the 50D.

LOL! Thank you Guyzerr!!! And I forget how much I said I had to spend...I won't be looking to see. If you are in love with the 50D then that might be enough to convince me.

I was looking at the Rebels not only because of the price, but because I am kind of romanticizing the idea of having a Rebel you know what I mean?

And I would never be all over you just because you forgot my price range.

I technically DON't have a price range, but if I was smart I would spend no more than $600.

I read B&H photo from cover to cover by the way It's like my porn. I feel dirty even thinking of buying all that stuff....

I one day want to get a good underwater camera so I can do pictures in the rain too...

I will also be needing advice on a negative scanner at some point in time because I am paying to have mine done right now and it is going to be $100 anyways...might as well get a scanner and do it myself.




Ok back to the topic on hand. I am just so glad I have all you lovely people to advise me

Let me go and look at these suggestions and I will let you know if I have further questions. YAY! I have options and things to think about!
