I think you've shown me pictures of him before! He's a cutie. And you're not old, Tracey. You're still smokin. I'd proudly go to Scruffy's with you. And only introduce you as my Mum if I met a REALLY hot guy. ;)

I think though, in keeping with the original context of the thread, that all places get judged or stereotyped somewhat. What do you think when you think of Australia? Steve Irwin or Crocodile Dundee, right? A dingo ate my baby? Kangaroos and koalas as pets? Snags on the barbie and beer in the Esky?

No I don't think any of those things! And if I met I certainly wouldn't you treat with you disrespect just because you are from there.

Yes not all Mainers sound like Tim Sample.
Not all Mainers are rednecks and live in the woods and hunt for food.

LOL - I went to Maine a few times with my friend to visit grandparents - they live by Mt. Kahtadin or however you spell it. They aren't rednecks, but I think that's only because its too cold to be.

cold bones are harder to warm

should i....nah....

mullets are so ugly

yes they are! But I had never seen one until I went to Paris. Fashion capital of the world my ass.

I just came from being upstate NY for two weeks, and before that Oregon for three so no one knew I was from the south until I said yall - I tried not to say it because I didn't want to give myself away. Just like when I dyed my hair brown...
When me and my mom got into our cab at JFK our cab driver asked us "Where in the South are ya'll from?" My mom asked him how he knew we were from the South and he told her b/c she sounds like Paula Dean (who, by the way, totally overexaggerates her accent AND doesn't cook nearly as good as my mom, LOL). He said "I'm from Lousiana...that's why I said 'where YA'LL from?'" LOL

I grew up in Maryland, a border state with Southern views. And I'm a recent transplant from Minnesota to Texas. Previously I lived in Texas for several years. I realize Texas is not Louisiana but here is my impression which may be skewed. ;)

Bigotry is everywhere but it seems higher in Texas as compared to Minn. Not to imply there are no bigots in Minnesota- there are or there are no tolerant people in Texas- there are. However Texas is a place where a white man can shoot a black man in his front yard, say it was because he was scared and a (white?) jury will let him off the hook. Is bigotry higher in the South overall? I'd guess yes, but it's just a feeling or a prejudice if you prefer but it's based on history (historical baggage) and there are lots more blacks, whites, and hispanics mixing there.

Manners are better down South- people will hold the door for you at the mall and will say please, pardon, excuse me. In Minnesota public manners are pretty poor.

Drivers- There are a high percentage of Minnesota ass-hole drivers mostly because they are overly aggressive in a much lower pressure environment than in any big city. Minneapolis, St Paul when it comes to traffic congestion don't hold a candle to any big city like Dallas/Ft Worth or Houston.

Texas seems to be more conservative, as in "red necks" although my intention is not to insult hard working farmers. :) Where morning talk show radio hosts on a Rock-N-Roll station drone on frequently about Guns, Gun shows, make up stuff about the government preventing common citizens from loading their own ammo, and the devil Obama and his intent of taking your guns away. And stories are related about the guy who killed the neighbor's dog after the dog killed his cat, then the dog owner shoots the cat owner and his daughter, then gets into a gun fight with the police when they arrive and is shot and killed. And the moral is "don't go overboard". I can't listen to that crap, although I do tune in later when it's just music. :)

Anyways. Just because I have a southern accent, don't mistake me for being of lesser value than you. If you underestimate or insult me I will show my southern roots and you will be so scared that you will have no choice but to pretend that I am trashy and not scary and absolutely right in defending myself.

I would never judge you on this basis. And Southern accents are much more sexier than Minnesotan. :)

Maybe it has just been my experience as a transplanted Yankee but,
I think you're right about southern folk being more open and accepting.
Or maybe it was the conservative part of the Midwest I grew up in.

I have family everywhere and I would say the people who grew up here, no matter what their political views, are more open and less old schooled

there are of course always exceptions, but to me southerners just seem too cool to be so upset sometimes.
