I sometimes catch myself turning my nose up something exceptionally popular for no other reason except that it's very popular :ninja

The worst example is with books. I'm such a snob about them - I didn't pick up Harry Potter till the third book was out. Twilight - resisted for ages until I was desperate for something new. The Shopaholic books - again, completely dismissed them for years. And yet when I actually read these books, I really like them!

Anyone else ever a bit dismissive about something for no good reason? :p

Yes, for the same reason.

Things I have resisted but gave into eventually - iPhone, Harry Potter, Twilight (but movie versions on last two).

More things may come to mind but those will do for start based on the 'being popular' reason.

And Buffy I resisted for ages because it seemed like a stupid silly name for a show and I didn't want any of it.

But I bought the box set because it was cheap a couple of years ago and when I got round to watching it, I was hooked and didn't want it to end when it did.

yes and yes...I still haven't read or seen Harry..(although I've heard he's good)

Same with all the Twighlight books.

I turned my nose up at the "millenium series" (Girl with the Dragon tattoo) etc...but loved them when I ended up reading them (my daughter convinced me);)

Up until now I've refused to have anything to do with anything Harry Potter. I love the fantasy genre. The only reason why I'm shunning Harry Potter is because of all the hype. :D I've noticed a crack in the armour lately, though. I might be starting to cave. :ninja :willy_nilly:

I tried the same thing with Survivor. Back when it first started it was THE thing to watch on TV and I said "Nope! Can't make me!!". That lasted until the last few episodes of the first season. I watched those and I've been hooked ever since. :D

I really have no interest in Twilight and it has nothing to do with the hype. I'm just not a vampirish kind of girl. :ninja

I definitely do this. I'm not a huge fiction reader, so the Twilight and Harry Potter thing doesn't interest me anyway. I avoided Sex and the City because it was popular (the reruns on E! are kind of addictive, eek), and Lost (still haven't watched), etc.

Ehhh, Twilight I don't think I will ever get into. Harry Potter, my grandad bought me the first HP book before it was ever even popular and I loved it. I remember I just got home from school and he said "I found this book at the store today, it was on sale and I thought you might like to read it". Which was right on cause I ended up being a super fanatic waiting for all the books to be released. I wanna go to the Wizarding World for my birthday and I'm aching to see the last movie hehehehehehehehehe :D

I was the exact same way with the Potter books. I held out until right before book 5 came out... borrowed them from my sister, and proceeded to read all of them in the course of a week. Then got impatient waiting the month until book 5 was released.

Lost is another great example of me failing to notice something awesome, precisely because everyone was so 'wow!' about it :p loads of my friends loved it, so true to form I was all like 'it's just a tv show, how good can it be?' and then I actually watched it and now I can't wait to forget enough of it so I can watch it all again :ninja

I was the opposite with Lost. I watched it at the beginning, made it two and a half seasons, and then got bored. I've been debating watching it on Netflix lately though.

Tv shows. That 70s show, lost, the office
All shows I love now. I wish I would have gotten into lost sooner, I caught up on all seasons and then watched the last season as it aired

I watched the entire thing (Lost) in 3 months. When you're watching 2-4 episodes a night, it becomes part of your fucking life. I won't spoil the ending but instead of a bit of discreet sniffling as would be expected if I'd watch one episode a week for several years, I bawled for about half an hour!

I was dismissive about 24, I heard it was so amazing. That was during the time the Shield was on, so I always watched that. I missed out on 24, and now nobody talks about it. Lol.

I'm a music snob. I assume I'll hate it if it's popular. Like Lady Gaga for example. Her songs are really catchy. Or The Arcade Fire. They're not horrible. Taylor Swift was a big one for me...I caved.

Haha! I do this a little bit, stupidly with stuff I already like. I'll hear the name of a new Katy Perry/Gaga/Rihanna song and think 'that sounds so lame' and muse about how awful it is when artists go downhill, and then when I actually hear it I love it :p

I was like that with Dexter... not that I snubbed it because it was popular. But that I watched four seasons of it in about three weeks. :24:

I think the biggest reason for me (and the reason people I've asked have given me), is that something gets SO hyped up that once you finally invest your time in listening/watching/reading it, it's a total let down. That was what happened with Twilight for me. My sister spent months trying to convince me that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, I finally read it and see the first movie and I almost shot her.
