Yeah, her doctor said that b/c of her constant non-compliance her pancreas had actually stopped producing appropriate insulin. I've never heard of someone progressing from Type II to Type I before.

I heard on the radio years ago a Dr. who was hooked up with I think the University of Kentucky. He said he could virtually guaranteeing one getting off insulin. No matter how bad the diabetes. The catch was it required a very, very strict diet and he said most people would not do it. Probably because diet in many cases can be what made one diabetic to begin with I would think.

I'm living with Diabetes. I was fighting with Diabetes for awhile..... until I let it get the best of me. Now I know I've got to make the choice to do something about it before it does damage that I can't reverse.

I just went to a Diabetes Education Class. It was a 2 part session with other people dealing with Diabetes. I'd recommend that your hubby talk to his doctor and get his doctor to set him up for the class(es). I even learned some new things at these classes since the last time I went to the classes.

The best book I got in class to take home and keep is called.... Choose Your Foods: Exchange Lists for Diabetes.

If you contact the American Diabetes Assoc. they can probably hook you up with a copy.

A person can eat just about anything they want.... as long as they do so with portion control in mind. Make gradual eating habit changes.

At the class, they'll teach him how to spread out his carbs at daily meals. Using the exchange lists is really a great thing and makes choices that much easier once you know how to use it.

As for booze..... it's allowed. You've got to eat while drinking though. If you don't.... you could end up on the floor!

Get a blood glucose meter too. They are free from various companies. Just make sure to check your insurance and see what is and isn't covered first.

As for white bread vs whole wheat bread..... the whole wheat has the benefit of fiber. Fiber is your friend. :)

The thing I learned this time around is that you should eat protein at each meal. The protein helps to level out any spikes that the carbs tend to do.

Good luck!

I heard that Diabetes can be cured by a very strict diet of 600 calories per day! Bwahahahahahahaha...... That would take true devotion to maintain.

Also.... Gastric bypass is a cure. For some.

If you think healthy food can't taste good, you need a better cook in your life...IJS We have tons of healthy food that tastes great...eating well doesn't HAVE to mean "if it tastes good, spit it out."

I'm a damn good cook pleas and thank you. I've also been a diabetic for longer than I care to remember. The best tasting foods are laced with fat and sugar plain and simple. If a person wants to get serious about getting their disease under control they have to condition their thought process and taste buds accordingly. That takes time and until it does healthy food tastes like shit.

And there is a HUGE difference in the way your body processes whole wheat vs. white bread. It all has to do w/ the glycemic index.

Yes but a gram or two or three of sugar can't tell the difference between whole or white flour. I gotta ask you this.... are you a diabetic and have you experienced what effect sugar has on the body. Unless you are a diabetic you have no idea.... personally speaking of course.

Again, huge difference in NATURAL sugars from fruit vs. actual sugar. Totally different effect on blood sugar. But yes, apples and cherries are 2 of the lowest sugar fruits when it comes to the glycemic index.

You read too much. To a diabetic sugar is sugar and it will have the same result regardless of what type it is. It makes a persons level increase which in turn makes a person feel like crap and all the while the disease is destroying all sorts of parts in your body.

Be careful w/ diet drinks, though, b/c some of them contain High Fructose Corn Syrup and that's just another fancy word for, you guessed it, SUGAR!!!

I don't know how your laws are relating to labels on food products but in Canada one of the things that must be on the label is how many grams of sugar are in a product. No diet pop sold in Canada contains even 1 gram of sugar so I believe it's safe to assume they don't use High Fructose Corn Syrup in ours. You might want to check an actual can which btw I will make a point of doing when I cross the next time.

He should have received some numbers on where he needs to try to be.... before eating.... 2 hours after eating.... in the a.m.......

The ADA recommends 90-130 mg/dl..... 2 hours after meals 180 mg/dl. Once he gets an A1C established... that should be <7%.

Maybe 84 is his low. Mine is around 70 and I get symptoms of low blood sugar.... I get shaky mostly. When his gets low and he acts or feels crummy.... have him drink a glass of juice. Nothing sugar free.

i told him today to stop and get a sugar packet, some orange juice or hell even a candy bar. the past two days he has been driving home from work feeling dizzy etc. he started taking the glucagen about 2 weeks ago. his thing is gonna be eating small meals through out the day, not a big meal all at once

Yep! He really should carry something.

Small meals are a great idea. Just make sure he eats the right stuff. That's the hard part.

Put a note in his wallet that he is Diabetic and what meds he is taking. Never hurts just in case.....
