Desperately Need Help

My computer crashed yesterday. My brother gave me a video card, and after I installed it, I think it infected my pc and then my computer freaked out and like exploded lol. So I tried to download a virus detector/deleter and after it installed it automatically shut down. Upon turning my computer back on all the icons and the task bar had disappeared, either then the mouse and wallpaper.

I don't know how to fix it. Does someone more technologically superior know what to do? I have to get the files off it. My neices life is on that computer, literally. I only have a few backed up on a seperate disk. Either then that I also have my entire online gym and computer tech class as well as several important assignments, reports, and presentations on it. And then all the pictures from my trip to the arctic...

I REALLY need to get better at backing up files so this doesn't happen again! :willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

BTW my PC is a frankenstien, put together from many other pc's, it's not really a singal system, but it's windows if that helps...

So yeah, help?

i would say you should have backed up all of your stuff. if you can get on in safe mode (when windows starting press F8 until it pops up a screen that says "safe mode" click yes to continue and click on the administrator icon. try copying your files from that account. after your stuff is copied, i would recommend reinstalling widows from scratch. BTW did you just pop the card in without installing drivers or files? You could also try (if you can get into windows, normal or safe mode) windows update in the start menu.

or if you know that brand and model number of the card, try going to the companys website to download drivers, i.e. i have a Radeon 9200 and have to go to ati website for the drivers

My brother did the installing, he is really good with computers...

I think I am going to put my old card in, the new one isn't even better, I think it's worse. I'm going to ask for a new one for my birthday, unless of course I have to buy a new computer...

i would recommend that until you get a better idea of the card.. it may even not be functioning correctly

1. Was it a used graphics card?
2. I don't know if a graphics card can infect your computer
3. Is the graphics card compatible with your motherboard?
a. the graphics card may be conflicting with other hardware...

You need to KNOW what you're installing. Their are minimum requirements on store packaging for a reason.

The new hardware was working with my computer for a few days, it was most definitely a virus that did it. I didn't download anything that infected it, because I'm not an idiot.

virus' can't pop out of thin air... Why did your brother not use this card?

oh and damn u seem to have alot of problems with your computer. Reminds me of me when I was your ages LOL.
