yeah that's the thing, they're pretty specific for their uses I think. If you've got a laptop, there's simply no need for one.

Macs at my college had to be defragmented
not often, but they did, seeing as the hard drive information is stored the same way

Mac's have a totally unique file system called HFS+ that stores files in a highly organised manner, rather than a store-where-you-can approach of other file systems. It's one of the reasons searching on a mac is instant, rather than the slow crawl of a windows machine.

Mind you, this has only really been in places since system 10.3 so if they were pre 10.3 then yes, a defrag was needed from time to time.

Windows 7 isn't as bad as previous Windows (don't mention vista or Millennium Edition, urghhh), you don't have to defrag as often, once in a blue moon

In my desktop (home build) I use two Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB first partition C:\ on HDD.0 100gb holds my OS - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and first partition HDD 1 D:\ holds all applications both HDDs are defraged each week
