Macs at my college had to be defragmented
not often, but they did, seeing as the hard drive information is stored the same way
Mac's have a totally unique file system called HFS+ that stores files in a highly organised manner, rather than a store-where-you-can approach of other file systems. It's one of the reasons searching on a mac is instant, rather than the slow crawl of a windows machine.
Mind you, this has only really been in places since system 10.3 so if they were pre 10.3 then yes, a defrag was needed from time to time.
