Debate Tournament Discussion Thread

It certainly is interesting, trying to shape an argument when you don't already have an opinion the matter, or you're going against your own beliefs :) if you're just debating on the forum in general, you still only pick the side you already agree with after all.

Thank god for google :p

I just google my brain *

:willy_nilly: I spent the WHOLE day yesterday researching... hope it shows.... and was worth it :24:

Hope so too because I wrote my opening argument when I was pissed!:D

:homo:

My initial opinion was in favor of the pro side of my debate - but since then I read a lot of articles and essays and it really opened my eyes.

Damn! I deliberately chose what I felt was the hardest side to argue as I like a challenge!

When debating in RL...you are given your subject then and there arent you?

You dont get to "google and research" if Im not mistaken....and laptops would be a no no?

Just a thought.....;)..I could be wrong....when I debated we were still using the quill and ink:willy_nilly:

Probably :) but it'd be really difficult to prevent people from doing a little research even if you made them both sit online and post each post directly after each other. I could still use the time when Siph was typing his reply to have a quick shufty around wikipedia, and vice versa.

Bit difficult to stop people on the internet using google really isn't it?

Obviously. It was an observation.;)

Back to you Siph!

I think you might whip me at this one, so in your next response, could you just mash the keyboard with your face please? :p

Hmm, if I was less than a gentleman, I could have my fun with that sentence :p

Still, my final response has been done - I typed it and did a word count in Works and realised I was 7 words over! Had to quickly adjust a few things :p

The floor is yours!

You're generally given your subject beforehand, and then you have to prepare both your pro and con arguments and potential rebuttals for both. You can take your notes with you, along with a pad and a pencil/pen in order to make notes for your response. Other than that, no outside materials are allowed... at least that's how it was when I debated.

Damn the word count!

As if you're a gentleman :p anyway I'm off to sleep soon so I won't post my reply tonight!

In the last tournament I would have loved to have heard Zirc argue the CON side to the Death Penalty from the Mennonite perspective.

That would have been very interesting to me...
What! You don't think arguing against marriage from a Mennonite perspective isn't interesting? :24: When my mom got married she was 24 and people were starting to get worried about her becoming an old maid. If you're Mennonite you get married and you get married before you're 20...unless you're me, my Aunt or my second cousin. We don't get married at all. :D

Seriously? :eek I had no idea.
We don't have school debates here, and I was only going by the American movies... and there they are always so well prepared, knowing quotes and dates and data.... like they done research for days... :willy_nilly:

Yeah guys....Im talkin the dim, dark ages here.....I would have NO idea how they do them these days....

You would be given the topic....what side you were to argue on....then an hour or so to prepare your argument...couldnt even go to the school library to access info.

You were allowed to take notes whilst the debate was going....but that was it.

I was always in a team though....never an individual debate.
