Richard Essex/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - It was a busy night Monday at Buck's IGA on the 3000 block of South Meridian Street. "Charlie," who didn't want his image or name used with this story, was in line to check out.
A man police later identified as Dwain Smith reportedly ran into the store wearing a ski mask and yelling.
Cashier Dianna Brooks repeated what she says she heard. "I heard the guy say 'give me all your money' and the next thing I heard was stacy saying 'somebody help me.'"
Charlie says he responded immediately. "When I heard it I automatically took mine (gun) out." And Charlie says he was ready to act. "If he had raised it (gun) up yes I would have shot him."
According to police reports, Smith jumped over the counter demanding the cash. Charlie pulled his gun and started for the commotion.
"He was turning against the other woman. He didn't actually see me coming up at first and then when he did, he turned around and I yelled at him to put down his weapon," Charile explained.
"(The) next thing I know is Charlie is jumping over the, uh, courtesy booth into the courtesy booth," said Brooks.
Charlie says was face to face with the suspect. "He just stare and looked at me for a minute. I cocked it back and then, all of a sudden, he laid it down on the counter and put all the money down."
The suspect gave up the money and his gun and took off his mask. The people who work at Buck's say the suspect has been casing the place for days.
When police arrived, Charlie had the suspect on the floor. "(I) just held him until the police got there. (I) put my foot in his back and the gun to his head."
Dwain Smith is now in the Marion County Jail facing several charges.

What a stupid idiot! Imagine if the robber had started shooting back! He was getting what he wanted and there was no reason for the guy to risk provoking a gun fight in which people could have got injured and killed! Yes he was brave but he was also extremely irresponsible and stupid!

Not at all...you can't have a cop everywhere at all times, so having armed, responsible citizens like "Charlie" is a God-send.

As the story said, if the robber had raised his gun, Charlie would have shot him and killed him.

And IMO, you have the responsibility to intervene if you wish to carry a gun. Had he not stopped the robber, maybe the women could have been killed.

I live in virginia, which has pretty much the most relaxed gun laws in the US. And I'm sure you can walk into most small stores like the one in the story, with a gun. But I only go to Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, and major stores like that which don't like non law enforcement to carry firearms into their store.

I've already stated my position on this before and I think it's a very dangerous situation where average citizens are allowed to walk around the streets with guns. Why the hell did Charlie feel the need to pop down the shops with his gun on him? That dosen't sound a very responsible thing to do! If that suits you, fine, but then the stats show that you do have a huge gun crime problem, far worse than over here.

Yeah, I lived in VA for about 11 years myself...all during my Military career. The only places that can legally stop you from bringing in a gun out there are places where children congregate. Schools and Movie theaters being the primary places. There is no Commonwealth Law that states that you cannot bring a sidearm into the WalMart if you have the proper permit to carry it.

Peter,
It's in our constitution that we're allowed to own firearms. That stems from when Britain was still trying to govern us and tried to make it illegal to own firearms during the Revolutionary war. It would have been a helluva lot easier to rule over here if the red coats were armed and the colonists weren't...but we all know how that turned out;)

Well I guess I will just agree to disagree with you and be glad I live in a country with far less gun crime.;) And outlaws arn't the only people who carry guns here, we have the Police who are much better trained to use them responsibly than an average Joe carrying one on his way to the shops.;)

If you have seen your average street cop here, you would put your money on somebody like Donnie or Tim, or Chris. I spend more time at the range than most street cops do. No offense to anyone, and I am not saying they are all that way, because I know a lot of dedicated cops. But they are not al that way.

Sounds like your Police need better training then. I'm sure there are many of you that are skilled in using a gun but I'm sure there are just as many who arn't and really arn't very safe carrying one around with them despite having a permit.

Right...and your cops say stuff like "Stop! Or I'll say Stop again!"

Ours say stuff like "Stop or I'll blow your mother fucking head off!"

LOL!!!!

I know the "Bobbies" are starting to pack heat now...I think it's kinda cute, lol!!!
