Going to Florida

It was December 2006 and almost the winter break. I was a seventh grader, and I was very excited. We were going to Florida. We have not gone to Florida for a very long time, and this was going to be my second time going there. It is my little brother Jerry’s first time. I was going to miss a few days of school, but not much, and I wasn’t going to miss anything important since the winter break was coming near.
On the last day before we were to leave, we packed everything. I took most of my prized possessions and put it into my backpack. I helped my mom pack the clothes. When everything was packed, I went to my room and read a book. Meanwhile, my dad took out the GPS. We were going to use the GPS to go to Florida. I wished we were taking the airplane to Florida instead of the car, but my parents wanted to save money, and driving was the best way. I wasn’t really looking forward to the car ride, for I knew it would be long and uncomfortable. However on the bright side, we were going to Florida. That was something to be happy about. The place I was looking forward the most was of course, Disney World.
The next day we woke up bright and early and put everything in our car. Dad had removed the back seat in order to put everything in. My brothers and I squeezed in the middle row. I put my backpack at my feet so I can access it easily. As I was waiting for us to leave, my older brother Jason was starting to tell my parents where we should go when we arrive in Florida, pointing and showing the places in the Florida Guide Book. He loves nature, especially insects, and would love to go anywhere that has animals, or even better, bugs. He wasn’t really interested in going to Sea World and Disney World. My little brother and I, on the other hand, were more eager to go to Disney World and Sea World, although Jerry was also agreeing with his brother.
I asked my mom if we were staying at a hotel. She said yes, but not the whole vacation. We were only going to stay at a hotel for a few days, then move in with a friend. I wonder who this friend was, and couldn’t wait. We finally left. I took one last look at my house before our car went around a corner. Then we were on our way to Florida, with the GPS directing us and my dad driving.
My brothers and I were already starting to get bored. I was looking out the window while Jerry bothered Jason. Then I suggested we play a game, and Jerry said he wanted to play I-Spy. So we started playing it, and we took turns. Afterwards we complained that we were hungry and my mom took a bag of chips from her backpack and gave it to us. I asked her how long it was going to take to get to Florida. She said it would take at least a day. A couple hours later, when it was night, we stopped at a rest stop. Dad filled the fuel tank and then we slept. Tomorrow Mom is going to drive.
We drove through Pennsylvania already; we went into Virginia then Georgia. We went to at least three rest stops. Then finally, Dad, who was driving this time, announced we were in Florida. I sighed in relief then realized it would take a while longer to get to our hotel. I asked how long we had to drive to get to our hotel and Dad said around forty-five minutes or so. Jerry was playing a hand-held game he bought along, and I asked if I could play on it. He said yes and gave it to me. That fixed my boredom.
We finally arrived at our hotel. I grabbed my backpack and we all poured out of our van. Dad went to check in and Mom took out all the baggage and suitcases. Then Dad came back and gave us our room number. Minutes later we were in our hotel room, and already Jerry was announcing where he was sleeping and who with. I did not like sleeping on the beds nor did I like sleeping with someone, so I said I would sleep on the floor. I’ve always done this when we go to hotels.
It was six in the evening, and I asked my mom what we were going to eat for dinner. She said we could go to a restaurant, because she had nothing that we could eat for dinner. So Dad used his GPS to look for a restaurant, like Pizza Hut or McDonald’s but Mom suggested we go out and drive around to find a good restaurant, perhaps a Chinese buffet. In the end we did what Mom suggested, and found a Chinese restaurant.

The first prehistoric dynasty is said to be Xia, from about the twenty-first to sixteenth century BC. It was traditionally supposed to have begun with the reign of Yu the Great and ended with the fall of Jie, lasting for more than 400 years. According to an ancient version of history, however, it was not Yu, but his son Qi, who founded the dynasty.[1]
About four or five thousand years ago there occurred once in the Yellow River valley a terrible flood which washed away whole villages with their houses and inundated large areas of cropland. Many people died in the flood and those fortunate enough to survive were forced to abandon their homes and live on hillsides or migrate to places very far away. During that time, Yao was the leader of the confederation of tribes who immediately summoned together the chieftains of all the tribes to discuss how to get the flood under control. Gun was elected to take charge of the fight against the flood.
For nine years under Gun’s leadership the people built dams and dykes to stop the flow of the rivers. However, all the efforts only ended in more disastrous floods. It happened more than once that no sooner was a dam or dyke built than it was destroyed by flood which carried sands and mud downstream until the mouth of the Yellow River was choked up and the afflicted areas became larger and larger while the number of victims increased. By this time Yao was getting old and yielded his place to Shun who attached great importance to flood control and went to the work sites for a personal inspection. Finding that Gun had failed in his mission, Shun had Gun incarcerated on Feather Hill and then killed. Afterwards he gave orders that Yu, Gun’s son, carry on the work of fighting the flood.
Barely four days after Yu was married, he received Shun’s orders. He was determined to have the flood under control, so he left his wife behind and set off for the work site. He first made a study of the causes that had led to his father’s failure. Then he made a careful survey of the afflicted areas and asked for advice from experienced workers. He abandoned Gun’s method of using dams and dykes to stop the flow of water, knowing the water tends to flow from higher to lower regions. He led his men in digging ditches and canals to divert the flood and also in dredging the river channels so as to provide outlets for the floods into the sea.
After thirteen long years of continuous efforts, Yu and his men succeeded in dredging all the rivers, big and small, and in doing away with the evil of flood. Those who had gone to live on hillsides or had migrated to remote places now came back to their native places. Under Yu's leadership, they tilled the land and planted crops and developed agricultural production. As a result, people were beginning to lead a good life.
Yu was held in great reverence by all the tribes who now addressed him as Yu the Great. Shun was convinced that Yu had both fine qualities and great competence and so recommended him as his successor. After the death of Shun, Yu became the head of the tribal confederation. Later his own son Qi set himself as the successor and it was Qi that set up the first slave-owning state in Chinese history - the Xia Dynasty.
The Shang Dynasty has the earliest recorded written history. The Shang (16th-11th century BC) lasted over 500 years, with 31 kings belonging to 17 generations.

Why is it that if someone tells you that there are 1 billion stars in
the universe you will believe them but if they tell you a wall has
wet paint you will have to touch it to be sure?
