I hate using contractions when I write. Even on the forum, IM, texting, etc.

I know I am guilty of it, but it really bugs me. Does it bug anyone else?

It clearly damages the integrity of sentence structure, and it feels like it is too informal.

It all depends on the context with me...

My texting is more formal than my regular typing and chatting..

depends on the word for me, but for the most part i do not like it. i think we really dumb ourselves down by using it.

I thoguht this was going to be a thread about pregnancy contractions.

I don't mind contractions of words. Whether I use them or not depends on my mood and my reason for writing (e.g. I'd never use them in essays and sometimes when I venture onto debates in here I'll change my language and properly look at what I am writing and grammar). I also change my language and word choice depending on who I am talking to.

I like the apostrophy. It's a gift to those of us who like shorter sentences.

I like the semi-colan; it is a gift to those of us who prefer sentences to flow but still worry about the amount of verbs per sentence.

It bothers me with certain contractions. I usually write, "can not/cannot vs. can't. I am okay with it's. Not too sure why some bother me others don't (<---doesn't bother me<---apparently, that one doesn't either!) hahaha

ooooh, and semi colons are among my favorite use of grammar; they really put another layer to what someone is saying. :)

Colons and semi-colons bother me a bit. At school we had a supply teacher for 4 English lessons and all she taught us was colons and semi-colons and their uses. 4 hours of her talking non-stop about colons and semi-colons.

Interrobangs are my favourite punctuation mark. It's non-standard and mainly used in informal writing. It's a excmation mark and question mark combined.

It doesn't bother me as you can tell from my reply. However, it's all about context.

I may choose to write more 'formally' but oftentimes, I do not. It can make one seem rather... stuffy - sometimes.

Contractions don't bother me. I can use them or not depending on where I'm at and what I'm doing. I talk very very very fast and I can also type fast too. As for writing/texting/etc..... I let my fingers do whatever they happen to want to do at the time.... they have a mind of their own.

I suppose as long as the meaning of whatever you want to say is understood.... it is all good. :)

Why is everyone hatin' on the contractions? I am a fan personally and don't find them informal at all (for the writing I do anyway).

I know a 29 year old who types like that, it makes her look like a kid. Most of the time I am struggling to understand what she is saying
