I don't think it's old enough to be a classic...but I usually get dirty looks when I say that I absolutely DID NOT care for Saving Private Ryan.

Also absolutely HATE Natural Born Killers.

That just made me think and I have to ask: who decides what a classic is? I think Natural Born Killers is NOT a classic: just an excuse for gratuitous violence.

If anything, I would say Natural Born Killers is a cult classic, and not a classic in the same room as a Godfather or a Casablanca, etc.

Who decides what a classic is? Good question. Probably critics. Your average movie fan who just watches movies for something to do don't give a shit like those who make it their lives. But along with that, a movie gains momentum and becomes historically important. Actually, I think that's the work of critics as well.
"Normal" people didn't have that much say in opinions because it wasn't their opinions that were broadcasted to the world, but I suppose that's even changed with the internet.

So I will stand by my critics answer until someone comes up with something better. But it's with great confusion.

I can agree with you for the most part but I do remember seeing several "best movie" polls and several always come out at or near the top. Sspark says Casablanca was a disappointment yet it lands at or near number in most polls. I also noticed in "best movie" threads in forums that you must consider demographics. Most young people can't appreciate low-tech, black and white movies while I can't stand all the high-tech ultra loud explosions and absurd, over-the-top car chases and the extreme violence of fight scenes. We are all creatures of our times and usually like what's contemporary.

Don't think this qualifies as a "classic"... but the movie Fargo... everyone talked about how great it was!!! NOT.. I thought it was long, boring and just a total waste of my time!
