I've had my current job for 14 years and I like the work but it's kinda taking a toll on me. Rough on my back and knees, and frankly I'm getting tired of all the driving. I applied at a place 2 miles from my house and got an e-mail asking more questions. I guess it's a good sign that I got a follow-up, not to mention both of my neighbors work there and love it and are putting in a good word for me.

My question is this: One thing they ask is what wage do I expect to work for, I thought it was a bad idea to put a number down, but they require it. I don't wanna put a number down that is high and that cause me to get passed over, but I'm not gonna put some smaller number down and get tied to that either. I suppose I will put exactly what I make now, because I really don't need to take any less.

What do you guys think?

Whenever I *have* to put a number down, I go to glassdoor.com and see if I can find an average. You might have to sign up, but it's free and you can unsubscribe from their emails.

If it's not unreasonable, I'd bump up whatever amount you would be willing to take by just a bit. Enough so if they try to talk you down, you still wind up where you want.

I'm a little gunshy about the number thing. I applied online there last winter and it asks for a number on the app. The number I put was higher than I expected to get but I assumed we would negotiate, but then I never got a call or email. I thought maybe the number I put down got my app got it set aside and passed over.

I'm really tight with my neighbor Tim, and he told me what he got to start so thats what I'm shooting for. If I can get that I will be happy. I would much rather be across the desk from them having a conversation talking numbers than just sending it back in an email.

I would not change jobs for less money unless I truly hated my present job or was unable to continue it for health reasons.

If I can get what he got its not a step down at all. Plus there are other factors that favor the new job over the existing one. Having more predictable hours and not driving so much, plus working inside all the time and not being outside getting burned up in the summer time.

I always put what I'm currently making, and then in the interview I make sure I mention that's why I put it down. So they know what I'm already making, and if they would like me to change to them, then they offer me an increase. It's worked the couple times I've done it.

This.

Actually, I've only applied for jobs in Massachusetts that are comparable to mine as far as pay and benefits go. There's no way I'm taking a $5 an hour pay cut just to have a job up there.

I've always just added a little extra on to what I'm already making, since I wouldn't move jobs unless there was more money involved anyway - putting my actual salary down as what I want wouldn't suit my purpose. If you're happy making what you make now but just want a change then put that down, if you do want more money then bump it up a little :)

It doesn't have to be a stupid amount, just enough to suit your needs.

Change your job but when you get your new job start looking for another that might satisfy you more
I have found that having a job I like but doesn't pay enough just gives me grief in the money and spending at home
so I would rather be miserable at work but make enough to be happy at home
but the ultimate would be to be happy at both places buts its a gamble to get that

A lot of companies are requiring salary info ahead of time. That way it saves both you and them a lot of time/money on the whole interview process if you want more than they'll pay. So, I would say put what you expect down. If they don't want to pay you that, well you shouldn't work for less than that anyway right? :)

Others have said what I would have.
I've never had to actually put a number down on an application so I've always just put in negotiable. If I was in this situation I'd put at least what I'm currently making.
Good luck with it!!!

I would ask for whatever you can live with. If that is the same as you are making now then so be it. But if the job is better and less driving you might be able to settle for making a bit less since you will be saving on gas and wear and tear on the car. Just something to consider. Plus you always can talk about getting a raise in a little bit if you work out to their satisfaction

"What experiences have you had that will contribute to your concept skills?"

What does that even mean?

Fuck if I know, LMFAO

On a related note to the original topic at hand, I had said when I started applying for jobs in MA that I didn't want to go too far out. I applied for one last night that is only 38 miles but equates to about an hour commute. BUT the starting salary tops out at about 10K more than I make AND they're only asking for 1 year experience or a high school diploma. ;)
