10k more there might not go as far as what you make now where you are, but I'm sure you are aware of the difference in the cost of living

"What experiences have you had that will contribute to your concept skills?"

What does that even mean?

It's a good place to plug any extras you have. I was a lifeguard/boy scout/volunteer/other super awesome non job related thing and it helped teach me to think on my feet/always be prepared/learn how to get people involved/etc

that kind of stuff.

Yep. ;) BUT the big picture in all this is that when I move to MA I'm going to be supporting me and only me. That's 3 less people that I'm supporting...makes for a lot fewer bills coming my way.

When you apply for a new job and especially if your working, here are a few things that have always served me right.

Never look like you need the job. If they ask why you are interested in the position, generally say its due to location, transit time, any reason but that you hate the job, want to leave or that the company doesn't want you any longer. You always want to be positive and never on the negative aspect.

Never ask anyone what their salaries are because they could be very bad negotiators themselves and have brought on extremely bad starting wages they cannot get out of. Besides most of us have no clue how desperate those people were when they negotiated their contracts.

Starting points for salaries depend on companies and some will ask for your last pay stub when you interview. Asking for your salary +35% increase is not out of the question even in a bad economy as long as you keep in mind they need you more than you need them. My last company did not harp one bit at that and in fact had already factored it in.

All I can say is good luck and that no two job interview / process is identical.

not trying to be an ass but what makes you think moving will make these people take care of themselves all of a sudden ??

I didn't take it that way at all. Without going into TOO much personal detail, I made the decision to move because of a few changes that came about. I had to wait until my nephew graduated high school, which he did in May. My mom had no income...she started collecting Social Security in June. And my brother had no job...he just got a job maybe a month ago. With me 1200 miles away, they'll have no choice BUT to take care of themselves.

Aside from that, I'm not really comfortable discussing any further details. V and Darrell know, but that's pretty much it.

It's not something I tell many people. I've been helping support my mom for almost 15 years now...just took on my nephew a year ago. I make my brother pay for his insurance and cellphone.

Ugh...there's so much more and it's WAY complicated...and I don't want to completely derail your thread, here, Mauls, LOL

Makes sense to me

I was just covering your ass

In a respectful way :D

And... If you think being 1200 miles away will effect their getting money from you then you need to be a bitch :D

Absolutely...and I appreciate it. ;) And yeah, I've already thought about that, LOL I mean, if I have spare money I don't mind helping out my family...but right now I'm being bled dry, and that's no exaggeration. It's time for me to take care of myself and move on. I think my mom still thinks it's just something I'm considering...I don't think she realizes how serious I am about it.

I've had my current job for 14 years and I like the work but it's kinda taking a toll on me. Rough on my back and knees, and frankly I'm getting tired of all the driving. I applied at a place 2 miles from my house and got an e-mail asking more questions. I guess it's a good sign that I got a follow-up, not to mention both of my neighbors work there and love it and are putting in a good word for me.

My question is this: One thing they ask is what wage do I expect to work for, I thought it was a bad idea to put a number down, but they require it. I don't wanna put a number down that is high and that cause me to get passed over, but I'm not gonna put some smaller number down and get tied to that either. I suppose I will put exactly what I make now, because I really don't need to take any less.

What do you guys think?

Hey Maulds, any update ? :p

I sent the questionnaire back and was told once the HR lady gets with the team leaders she will get with me to schedule an interview. Nothing since....glad I'm not unemployed and waiting on pins and needles.

Well funny how things change. My neighbor just told me that not only have they decided to hold off on hiring right now but his overtime was cut and he is back to just 40 hours. My job isn't in jeopardy, its actually getting to the easier time of year. I only applied because I wanted something new, really burned out on what I do now but oh well. Doesn't look like I will be changing teams.

Aww, Mr. Maulds--that's a bummer. Good thing you still have your current job though, hopefully it slows down enough that you can breathe a bit.

Keep your eyes open, never know what you'll find.
