simply reading the book will not make you anything but smarter, the book may pose questiosn that you may wish to ponder, you will make your own mind up

Is that just becuase the main character is percieved to be anti-social or because it has been associated with some murders?

I can't really say anything about the book, I've never actually read it.

I think it's a bit silly to associate any books/music/films with murders in general.

A few murderers may have read a certain book (like Catcher in the Rye) but many many normal people read those books (Catcher in the Rye is actually a set exam text in some GCSE English Literature papers, so THOUSANDS of 15-16year olds have to read it every year) without commiting murder.

agreed, i would wager more have killed because of what they read in The Bible, than in Salingers classic

That is just a stereotype. When I was in high school, you only read Catcher in the Rye if you were an "emo" kid or a "scene" kid. It's a stupid generalization. I read the book and loved it. Definitely read it again if I still had it.

I wrote an Oral Self Help book once. I called it Catch Her In the Eye.
On topic: I can't remember if I've read the book. i might have in high school.

The book is famously linked to one of the most famous and senseless murders in history.

After Mark David Chapman killed John Lennon the police found him just sitting on the curb, reading it.

Ever since then, it's been linked to the idea of the lone nutcase.

Kinda like sitting on a bus, riding Mein Kampf- you'll get a lot of odd stares even if you are reading it for educational purposes.

I read it a while back, I didn't ever read it in public. it was good but you can't just go in and think "it's just a book", it's not for everybody. It's very....involved.

The funny thing is about the name of a book, I know a pub name "Catcher in the Rye", strange irony if it were true though, just wanted people's view on what told to me :24:
