While I agree that he's probably right with the undercurrent of this when it comes to the extreme right, I really hate when people keep playing the race card and I find that as bad as racism, if the right were saying they didn't want the health reforms because Obama is black, fair enough but the're not and Carter is being a prize idiot here.

arter says Obama row is 'racist' Former US President Jimmy Carter says much of the vitriol against President Barack Obama's health reforms and spending plans is "based on racism".
Mr Carter told a town-hall meeting there was "an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president".
Republican lawmaker Joe Wilson was rebuked on Tuesday in a House vote.
He shouted "You lie!" while Mr Obama was delivering an address on healthcare to Congress last Wednesday.
The House resolution of disapproval described it as "a breach of decorum".
But Mr Wilson's eldest son, Alan, has denied racism was a factor in his father's outburst.
Some conservatives have accused the president's supporters of playing the race card.
'Abominable'
Angry town hall meetings and a recent taxpayers' demonstration in Washington have been vitriolic towards the president, reports the BBC's Americas editor Mark Mardell.
Many have not just protested against the president's policies but have accused him of tyranny, and have promised to "reclaim America".
"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national programme on health care," Mr Carter said at a town hall meeting at his Carter Center in Atlanta held prior to the Congress vote on Tuesday.
"It's deeper than that."
Responding to a question specifically on Mr Wilson's outburst, he said Mr Obama was the head of state as well as the head of government and - like heads of state elsewhere, such as the Queen of England - he should be "treated with respect".
It was a "dastardly thing to do", he said.
His comments were rejected by Joe Wilson's son, Alan, an Iraq veteran who is running for state attorney general in Georgia.
"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," he said.
Apology
In Tuesday's vote, lawmakers voted 240-179 in favour of the resolution to censure Mr Wilson.

The move was backed by most Democrats, but dismissed by many Republicans as a distraction from more serious issues.
"My goodness, we could be doing this every day of the week," said Republican Minority Leader John Boehner.
But Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer insisted that Mr Wilson's outburst could not be ignored.
"At issue is whether we are able to proceed with a degree of civility and decorum that our rules and our democracy contemplate and require," he said.
Mr Wilson himself maintained that his personal apology to Mr Obama should have been enough to resolve the matter.
Mr Obama "graciously accepted my apology and the issue is over", he said.
Mr Wilson's remark came in response to a passage of Mr Obama's speech in which he asserted that illegal immigrants would not be eligible for federal subsidies to buy health coverage.
Experts concur that under the terms of Mr Obama's reform package undocumented immigrants would not be able to claim healthcare subsidies.

The short answer is that to some degree, race plays a factor with the anger associated with our African American President.

The long answer is there are racists who will scale up the verbal attacks on Obama primarily based on their prejudices while trying to blend in with those who have honest differences based on philosophy, ideology, and political leanings. In some cases the motivation is clear, while in others it's more difficult to decipher the true feelings involved. I would not try to assign a percentage of those acting on racial prejudice, but I would guess it is a substantial number. However, I would never accuse someone of being a bigot based solely on their disagreement with his policies.

A few years ago, dissent was the highest form of patriotism. Now, apparently, its the greatest form of racism.

Funny how things change...

huh?

He's saying that when people were dissenting against Bush, it was labeled "patriotism". But now we have Obama as the President, and people are expressing dissent, and it's being labeled as "racism". In effect, disagreeing with Bush and expressing it was patriotism, but disagreeing and expressing it is racism. What the claim seems to be is that if Obama was white, this health care "reform" would be passing and people wouldn't be expressing their dissent.

Just like the occassional reformed alcoholic will label anyone who drinks as an alcoholic, there are those so hyper-sensitive to their own propensity toward bigotry that they see racism in any word or gesture not fully supporting black people.

It's part of the systemic cancer that keeps the color code alive, and keeps entire communities poor and dependent. Once again, Jimmy does harm through his good intentions.

I think the notion that there is an underlying racism in the criticism of Obama's policies is silly.

Saying such a thing trivialises the issue of racism in general. It reminds me of how the Israeli's accuse their critics of being anti-semitic.

I am really sick and tired of hearing "if you dont support Obama, you're a racist". Every time the "race Card" is thrown out........there is almost no defense, unless you have concrete proof/evidence to the contrary,....even then the damage is already done. i lost a good job years ago working at TIA, every day for a month when i came to work one guy would say "whats up honky?", i didnt want any problems so i did'nt complain...after a point i got fed up ....one day i replied "not much mah niggah", and BAM fired for "racial slurs".....

This is bullshit!!!!, the people who keep this going should be hung (bad choice of words)....flogged. people like Al sharp-cheddar and the irreverent Jesse (may as well be michael) jackson are more guilty of the proliferation of racism than anyone in congress and the senate COMBINED. why don't these motherfuckers ever talk about how africans sold other africans into slavery?, why dont they go after them?....becuase there isnt any money in it. its always the whites hate blacks, asians, jews etc.

I am tired of having to bust my ass so someone can sit on theirs, i'm tired of having to support other peoples families becuase they lack resposiblity and motivation, i'm tired of paying for somone else's health care just becuase they are here in the U.S. and have a fucking tummy ache.....and i dont want to hear shit about reparations becuase there isnt a single person alive who had to go through slavery back then or deserves it.

i dont give a fuck what color anyone is...im tired of getting fucked over and having to take it becuase people are lazy or stupid, and im tired of the U.S. playing "World Police".

it seems like the more we help people the lazier and more dependant they become, quit making me pay to take care of everyone else...and i'll be able to take care of me and mine (that doesnt sound right, but you get the idea)....i will never see or be able to use the money i pay or have payed in to Social (IN)Security.
If people would "man up" as it were, and take more responsiblity for their own actions the world would be a better place.

Cod-Damnit!!!

Dunno about in the rest of the USA but on Otz, when Bush was in power, the members here who slagged off the war and what he were doing were constantly being told they were unpatriotic or in my case, an American basher.

You guys realize that these calls of racism have nothing to do with racism, don't you? It's a distraction to kep us from noticing that they've run out of defences for their healthcare takeover. Obama's already testing the waters for completing his takeover of the financial industry.

Dunno who you mean by that but the White House has catagorically rejected the racism claim.

White House rejects racism claim
US President Barack Obama does not believe current criticism of his policies is based on the colour of his skin, the White House has said.
It was responding to comments by former President Jimmy Carter that much of the vitriol against Mr Obama's health and spending plans was "based on racism".
Mr Carter said many thought an African-American should not be president.
Congress has also witnessed an outburst against Mr Obama that led to the rebuke of Republican lawmaker Joe Wilson.
Mr Wilson's son has denied any suggestion of racism in the outburst and some conservatives have accused the president's supporters of playing the race card.

Whatever his motives, his words are a brutal reminder that the election of Barack Obama did not usher in a new age of post-racial politics in the US if anyone was naive enough to think that it might.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Mr Obama "does not believe that the criticism comes based on the colour of his skin".
"We understand that people have disagreements with some of the decisions that we've made and some of the extraordinary actions that had to be undertaken by this administration," Mr Gibbs said.
Mr Obama has been met with angry protests in recent weeks. Some people have not only protested against the president's policies but have accused him of tyranny and have promised to "reclaim America".
"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national programme on healthcare," Mr Carter said at a public meeting at his Carter Center in Atlanta.

Of course the White House has to appear to be above such things. That's why they drag ol' Jimmy out of moth balls to say it. Our election campaigns are the same way. The actual candidates seldom if ever stoop low. That's the lackeys' jobs.

Yeah, it makes sense that Jimmy Carter or any other politician would be willing to take onefor the team, be slagged off by their leader and left looking a complete fool.

Jimmy's always fought against racism. It fits for him to take this on. It's a distraction, nothing more. Let's see if it works. I doubt it will.
