Very true Hans. Too often I hear people complaining about poor services from government then the next day complain about having to pay so much taxes. Simple rule of thumb, you get what you pay for.

Nice platitude but bullshit nonetheless. Can't speak to Canada but the US Federal government could cut spending on the federal government 20% and still provide effective services. Your platitude assumes that the government is operating efficiently (it isn't and never has) and has an incentive to provide services at the lowest cost (it doesn't and never will).

That is what you get with a cradle to grave mentality.

Which is the big difference between conservatives and liberals.

Conservatives believe there is no way the govt can do all this stuff. Not only because it is wrong and misplaced priorities on what a govt should provide but more so because the govt sucks in money like a vampire. and you get nothing in return other than a rotting corpse.

Hear what you are all saying, I buy tobacco on the black market. I know that isn't stolen shit, it's just imported from Europe where its miles cheaper. I dont buy stolen goods, I just dont buy into the governments daylight robberry on alcohol and tobacco which they try and condemn despite it pays for the NHS twice over.

yeah it is hilarious how the govt condemns smoking and then torches it with sin taxes. yet without those taxes the govt would be really broke. such hypocrisy is amazing.

Also, if you are concerned about the economy, youd know not spending your revenues legally/in the manner it should be spent is contributing to the current economic situation. Its the simple logic of supply and demand, if a legal supplier is supplying a good at a reasonable price in a legal fashion, but the consumers are buying it from a cheaper/illegal source,it forces the price of the original product to drop to compete, which hurts the company, or it will raise in price to help their company stay afloat, which hurts the average american who is playing by the rules.

Im gussing most of you havent taken economics classes, I suggest taking a few macro/micro classes on economics. They are there for OUR protection as a group. Some might want to buy into some lameass conspiracy theory about the government trying to do this or that, but MOST of the time (not 100% of the time) guidlines/rules/laws are inplace to allow the economy to prosper.

Ttax on tobacco and alcohol pays for the entire NHS three times over, the government can go fuck its self with its lame excuses about health as far as I'm concerned, unless theydont want to see people getting government health care.

I dont know much about the National Healthcare Service? (not sure, becuase obviously we dont have it), but Americans cant relate. I live in Virginia, where a very large amount of Tobacco is grown, but we have a tax simply to discourage people from buying it. It makes those who are on a bad habbit pay a tax to a 13 didgit dephecit.

That pisses me off when they say otherwise, like roughly how the care provided for smokers and drinkers costs more than the tax from the products gains - if that is true, why don't they release the figures?

The fact remains if everyone in Britain decided to stop smoking and drinking, there'd be a few extra beds in the NHS hospitals, but no electricity.

...that was his point...lol :p

Anyways, there will always be a "poison" the government will tax in an attempt to "correct" the society. It may be crap to some, but I think its the best choice to make from the Governments standpoint.
