Birth control for unfit parents

Tbh I am getting bored of arguing with the Boys from Brazil...

Give me one example of where people forfeit human rights.
And don't make me go quote the UN website, cos I've drunk too much and I might just lose it and punch my face through the desk.
 
Forfeit is something you give up yourself or something taken away from you for wrongdoing. Look it up.
Ergo, no one can forfeit there or anyone elses human rights because all humans are entitled to them, no matter what. I believe at the top of the very paper that humans rights are drawed up on illustrates this exact point - from the kings to the paupers, from the killers to the philanthropists.

If people take them from you is a completely different matter, it's called Crimes against Humanity.

BTW--you'll never see even forced temporary sterilization in the US or the UK. You may see a trade offered--i.e., do 5 years in jail for child abuse/endangerment or agree to 5 years of sterilization. So you can rest easy--the child abusing scumbag parents will continue to be permitted to procreate! ;)

Your trade is full of flaws and is beyond even an argument, too many holes in it, give me more details to cover those holes and possibly you may have something to argue.

That's right, they would be. But if these parents are not being put in jail, their rights are not being taken away or forfeited. They are free. You can't go around taking people's freedom or human right to procreate. As I've said from the beginning of this thread - enforce the laws that are on the books now instead of creating more laws. Don't start going all nazi on free people forcing them to be sterilized, or have medical procedures against their will, or forcing drugs on them that they would rather not take. It is wrong, plain and simple.
 
It might be important to clarify what we're talking about here.

Are we talking about required birth control, as in no other choice?

Or, are we talking about voluntary birth control in lieu of another penalty?

There have been plenty of instances where the courts have given offenders options. I've heard of cases where chronic dead-beat dads are given the option of voluntary vasectomies instead of stiffer punishment.

I recall one case where (I forget the exact details) a man had fathered somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen children with as many women and did not have the means to pay any child support. The court gave him the option of a vasectomy to save some jail time. He still had to serve some jail time, but it was considerably less than had he refused the vasectomy.

I'm all for options such as those. But I still believe that requiring birth control without any other option goes way beyond the boundaries of a free society.
 
I voted yes. I think there are several situations where women should be forced to have some sort of birth control procedure done. Everyone has heard of welfare moms who know they have to start a work program once their youngest child is weaned so what do they do? Have another child so they dont have to find child care and go to work! I think women should be forced to go on birth control after they have sought more than 2 abortions..if they arent smart enough to figure out how to prevent an unwanted pregnancy then someone needs to do it for them. Abortion is NOT a good form of birth control. I would also support enforced birth control as a part of sentencing on parents who have been found guilty of child abuse. It would be perfect for repeat drug addicts, too.

Mulder's incentive program idea would work well, especially for the first category of people I listed. It would save tax payers money in the long run. I dont know if permanent sterilization is the answer...getting your tubes tied would be perfect. That way if a person matured and got their act together, they would have the option at a later time to have kids .

Sounds like a proposal for the "Bureau of Parental Responsibility" headed by Pat Robertson... ;)

Although I understand this argument and its merits, something makes me uncomfortable when it comes to the Government deciding whom to sterilize. Why is that?

Probably because sterilization is so permanent? How would you feel about it being temporary instead? Lets say that a woman is starves her infant to death while she spends her money on drugs. A judge could give her a choice....go to prison for 7 years or have your tubes tied for 5 years and go to jail for 2. At least that gives society 5 years peace of mind knowing she isnt going to be bringing another child into the world to neglect.

Another scenario...a couple is on welfare and they spend their monthly check on themselves while their 4 children, aged 6 months to 5 years old, are constantly unsupervised, undernourished, wear rags and living in filth..the home is disgusting...moldy food on plates in the sink, cigarette butts in half empty cans of beer, maggots in the garbage can, rotten milk in a half-empty fridge...if they are convicted of neglecting their kids then why not take away their right to have more until they can prove that they are responsible?

I'm not suggesting to take away the right to conceive from a young mom who leaves her sleeping baby alone in the car for a minute while she runs into the store for diapers...i'm talking about serious cases of neglect and even worse, abuse.
