They did well with that movie but there were parts that bothered me. I didn't like what they did with Prince Caspian but Reepicheep was spot on.

It depends how loose you want to get...

Dr Strangelove is based on a book. Blade Runner is based on a book, both are probably better than the source material. But quite different.

If I was to limit myself to pretty faithful adaptations, I'd say Mother Night, from the Vonnegut book of the same name, to be very good.

But then, Jurassic Park the movie is probably more enjoyable than the novel by Michael Chrichton (sp?)

I thought Gone with the Wind was done well. As was Secret Window.

I think it's tough to pick the best as in number one. I would agree that Lord of the Rings and Gone with the Wind were both true to the books and outstanding stories. Although it's been a long time since I read it, I believe To Kill a Mockingbird was true to the book.

Now I need to try to remember what movies I went to see after reading the books and they were nothing like the book! It's been a while. :) I do remember starting to read Fried Green Tomatoes after seeing the movie, and I remember the story was structured quite differently.

This is a book they took all kinds of liberties with, putting bits and pieces of the books into different movies. While I acknowledge the dinos were top notch, Spielberg butchered the books which I really liked. Speaking of Chricton, they did a good job turning Timeline into a movie, imo.
