I'd love to go to Hawaii some day!

Have you ever traveled across country by yourself in a vehicle that you drove? If not, would you ever want to? (excluding gas prices of course)

In 1975 I did.

My mothers brother remarried a woman who lived in California. They married real young and divorced real young. They were both in their late 70's when they remarried. So yeah they remarried after 40+ years apart.

I flew out with her to drive her car back from the suburbs of San Fransisco. It was kind of crazy as I stayed at her daughters house for a few days before coming back. They had two teenage daughters and one wanted me to take her out. I was 22 years old and she was 15 and there was no way I was doing that. This was a typical CA family out of the post hippie era. Very interesting

Anyway I drove from there to Vegas and spent a night in Vegas. From there I drove straight for a couple of days almost. Ended up hallucinating I was so tired and slept at a rest stop outside of Columbus Ohio. The one thing I vividly remember was being intimidated going thru New Mexico. Seemed like all that was there were Mexicans which scared the crap out of me worrying about being robbed or conned. A poor little ole white boy just did not fit into that scene

Interesting.

I can't imagine driving nonstop that long without rest. I was asked to drive a car towing a small boat (which I had never done before) on the way back home from a vacation. The driver was falling asleep and woke me to take over! I was sooooo tired. At first I thought okay... I can do this. So I rolled the window down, turned the radio up loud and sang along. That worked for like 15 minutes. Then I felt the complete exhaustion take over. It had never happened before so I wasn't sure what was going on. I just remember looking for the reststop signs along the freeway. I'd see one and it would end up being a sign for something else. I was really freaking out and realized I was going to fall asleep at the wheel! I truly did not believe that could happen to someone until that moment. Luckily, the rest area sign came up and I sped down the off ramp and stopped the car abruptly. Lucky the damn boat didn't come through the rear glass. Woke everyone up after that!

Why did you feel the need to drive back without stopping more often?

I felt unease in NM so I just decided it best to get home.

True story............ In Missouri I got caught in speed trap on the expressway. They nailed a bunch of us. I was dead tired at this point. So as the cop comes up to the car all I could think of was going to jail like they do in Ohio. Now my uncle was actually rushed into the hospital while I was out west so I figured I would act really upset on the verge of crying and tell him I was just trying to get home to my uncle who was in the hospital and that I had been driving continually from Vegas to get home. I offered that he could call to verify. It was true although I don't think it was life threatening. The guy looked at me and said I looked like hell and to go get a room and some sleep and let me go.
