ok if someone is in one country over 30 years and only can say very few words i can understand the frustration on some people.... you will think what they do so long ..but then again you can not expect everyone to learn one language in a year either .. not everyone can learn a language fast.... call that person stupid or slow learner or what ever .. but been rude that's a little too much...

I do understand at work places you do want someone with some good English or if not perfect good communication skills if it is around with people.. i agree with that 100%

but did anyone actually ever thought why some people dont speak a lot from the start?

i can give some example of myself .. people don't take me serious dont want to talk to me a lot before even know me good or don't give any chance and judge so fast just because i may not speak like them .i been even not let in in a place for that so before why some people talk their language more or hang more with people from their countries maybe a part have to do with that also .. and maybe they try less..

yes some are rude also go to a country and do not try
but some do try and still get the same

My point was if someone is here for a short time and tries to learn the language good for them.
I believe if you are in a country for several years you should learn some of the language.
Here I know some people who speak English well enough to get by but when it is convenient for them they act as though they do not understand the language. That is not stupid that is dishonest.

My nephew is dating a girl from Mexico. They were in a Mexican restaurant and she overheard two of the waiters speaking in Spanish make a comment about her figure. She smiled and proceeded to tell them in Spanish they should be more careful what they say because some other people speak Spanish too.:24::24::24:

I'm rude to people who stand on doorstep trying to sell something and call me a bitch. And I've been rude to people out in town who are harassing. But never because someone can't understand me or vice versa.

Although, it does frustrate me that people come to the US to live and expect me to accommodate their native language. And it's not like someone has to speak perfect English, but it's pretty obvious if you're trying or not. I'm to the point where if something has English and Spanish written on the box or label or what-have-you, I won't buy it.

To become a citizen here I think it should be required that you learn the language.

I do believe it is given it states so in the books handed out for the review of American history for Citizenship requirements. Part of the requirements is to pass an English test- spoken, written and reading. The thing that I question is : those who go for the Citizenship Interview ( Mexicans/Latinos mostly ) have translators with them. That got me confused :willy_nilly:

Is it maybe bcoz, Spanish is a second language that they can get away with it not having to learn English? ( doesn't make sense though )

I find it almost impossible to be rude to anyone. Not sure why? I think because my father has been rude to pretty much everyone his entire life and I couldnt stand it growing up. Now I find myself not being rude when I should be.

I get pretty irate when I call customer service for something and someone who barely speaks English picks up, that is just totally uncalled for and an insult to your customers to have make them deal with that.

THIS:nod:

I tell them its not personal when I do get upset, but it shits me to tears. I ask to be put through to a call centre in Australia, or to speak to a supervisor

One of my pet peeves is having to accommodate other languages instead of them learning English. Spanish seems to have become as accepted as English which I do not understand. I may be wrong but I thought years ago a workable understanding of English was required to become a citizen. I believe learning to speak English was a point of pride when America was still considered "The Melting Pot".

I fight back with what little Spanish that I do know.

My current favorite thing is when a guy starts speaking to me in Spanish, I stop them and say
Lo siento, no entiendo. Diga me en ingleis por favor. (I'm sorry, I dont understand, tell me in English please.)

:cool My Ancestors came over here and learned English. As should anyone else.

Until China takes over the world, English is still the language of business.

On a cool note, my SIL lives on Sanibel Island. They have Beware of Wildlife signs in English, French & German w/cute little animals on them. All the rest are in.................. English.

This has been my biggest pet peeve since I came to this country!.. I taught myself to speak, write and red English in six months..

My mother language was Spanish.. the real one, which we called "Castellano"..
This PC thing with everything having to be translated into Spanish gets on my nerves like nothing else.!!... :mad
There are countless idioms in the world, and the US is a melting pot of people from all over.. Why in the world is only Spanish used as a second language??.. :(

Let me tell you just how much this irks me..
I have two Facebook accounts, and have many friends that were born and live in different countries, like India, Japan, Russia, Norway, etc.. they all speak a different language and have learned English also..
I used to play Farmville with them and accepted a few requests from people from Spain and other Spanish speaking countries..

A few weeks after that, all of the ads on the right side of my page -in both accounts- were in Spanish!.. :(
Not only were they on that language, but were almost pornographic in content!.. :eek
I am no prude, but that really pissed me off, to the point where I was so disgusted, I wrote the following, in capital letters on my status:

"Dear Facebook: Give me back my page, in English only, please!!..
I have friends that were born in other countries and speak many different languages.. Just because I speak Spanish fluently, does not mean I want to see your pseudo porn ads in that language!.. "

I also copied that and sent it to FB headquarters..
A few days later, all the ads in Spanish disappeared from my pages.. :p

To go back to your comment, yes, you need to learn English to become a citizen... at least that was the norm years ago..
When my husband and I became citizens thirty years ago, we had to take written and oral tests in ENGLISH to prove we knew the language..
We also had to have a great deal of knowledge about the constitution and history of the US!!..
Many people that were with us in that room on the day of the tests, failed one or the other and were denied their citizenship!..

As for your original question... and to get back on topic... I am never rude to others...

EXCEPT TELEMARKETERS!!!.. :p
