Weird how I've been really emotional the last few days.

Hmm. I need to come up with a persuasive speech topic on a social issue for my communications class.

I'm having a hard time coming up with something specific enough to write a 5-7 minute speech on.

My other speech, that's due next week, is an informative speech about an international city...I might do that one on the city of lights. Or pick something random and obscure...lol

Cartagena, Columbia.

Why? I have absolutely no idea, but it was the first city that came to mind when I thought of a random city. :24:

For persuasive... you should totally give a speech on why the Coyotes need to stay in Phoenix. ;)

Well... foiled on both fronts. You could almost call the Coyotes a local social issue... but not really.

For the cities, I would personally choose Petra, Jordan... simply because of the history and such surrounding it. Or Jerusalem for similar reasons... otherwise Casablanca cause it's fun to say. :24:

I'm not looking for help on that part, dork.

I don't have a pre-set list of social issues to choose from. And I need to decide today.

Could TWLOHA count as a social movement? Or something more specific like suicide awareness and prevention, alcohol/narcotic abuse, or something along those lines? I think those types of items are up your alley, at least in terms of things that you're passionate about. Or are you supposed to stick to social concerns like the hungry and homeless and stuff like that?

Here's what she said:

"You will be selecting a social problem to address for the Persuasive Speech Assignment. Social problems may be political, economic, social justice issues, health issues, or environmental. You will select a problem and advocate a solution to fix the problem. The more specific you are with the problem, the more specific you can be with the solution. Narrow your topic to fit the time constraints of the speech."

So, it would be something more along the lines of say...bullying leading to depression and suicide and a solution to fix the problem.

The ridicule of or misunderstandings surrounding mental illnesses, the negative effect that it has on people that suffer from the illnesses, and education for the masses on why they're a bunch of assholes to people with problems. :D

Suicide rate among teens that suffer from depression due to misdiagnosis or non-diagnosis of the depression, and the solution being better education to parents and families on recognizing the signs of problems.

The bullying leading to depression and suicide is a pretty good one. Bullying of homosexual students in schools leading to a lack of social awareness and perpetuating the stigma that homosexuals are somehow "different" than other people. The death penalty and wrongful executions (hell, you could just steal points from the debate that was had here on that subject).

Do you want a speech outline to use? I got an A in public speaking so it won't be bs or anything. :p

An outline makes a speech, cake. Unless you hate talking infront of people.

I don't know if this helps any... but when I did my speeches, I wrote them like I would write an essay or a paper first, and then adapt it into a speech. Come to think of it, maybe that wasn't as novel a concept as I thought it was originally. But I just always found it easier to write it that way to see if it even worked, and because I could get my words out in that fashion better than if I was actually writing a "speech". As you and I both know, I communicate much better through thought out written word than I do actually speaking. :24:

Just a thought... probably a dumb one in retrospect though. /facepalm

That's actually the worst way to write a speech. At least according to my Professor, and he had a Ph. D. :dunno

Eh, it worked for me... and I got an A+ in the class. :dunno Wrote it as an essay, and then adapted it to speech format, and then outline.

and I just remembered the bonus part... I got to turn around and use one of the speeches that I wrote in essay format first in another class as a paper, and got an A+ on it there too. :24:

The good news is I'm taking this class online, so all I have to do is record myself making my speech and then upload it to youtube. I've held off on taking this class up until now because I couldn't get into the online class. That's how much of an aversion I have to getting up in front of people and talking...lol

With five classes, if I don't have to write a three or four page essay, I'd rather not. That involves a lot of work. I'm already going to have to do the research, make some sort of visual aid and record the speech. Plus, I have the informative one due this Monday, and that's just for this class. :p

It's probably not a horrible way to go about it, though. At least it'll help you organize your thoughts if you're having a hard time with it.

I opted to go with poverty and education and how children who live in lower income areas are not only at a disadvantage because their schools are not as funded, but also, children who live in low income families tend to miss a lot of school, drop out early, or be pulled out to help make money for the family. And how their lower education standards keep them at a disadvantage as far as getting a better paying job. Vicious cycle and all that.
