I'm grateful to live here, and I am proud of what my country has accomplished.

Is that so bad? Am I not allowed to be proud to say "I'm an American" because I am, sorry.

Who said it was bad to be proud of your country? Just be proud for real reasons (not implying you don't have good reasons).

*what* is there to be proud of???

it is a built-up sense of pride that is destroying this country, and yet people persist in developing that pride.

i will gladly revoke my US citizenship if that course of action is continued, because it will have no value in a few decades.

It depends on how short of a view you want to take along with your perceptions. Right now, I'm not particularly proud of where our leaders have taken us, nor am I proud of corporate morals business-as-usual but there is no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.

another thing that I was kind of thinking too - good point!

I don't have a pride that says "my country is better then your country" I have pride that says "I am proud of what y country does, has done, and what it's history is" I don't see how that is 'hurting the US' in such a big way.

I am thankful for what previous citizens have accomplished so that I may live as I do today; I am also quite thankful for the founding fathers' opinions and convictions and *acting* on them to do what they felt is right; I am unable to describe my gratitude for those who are willing to pick up the call of freedom, so that others may enjoy liberty.

I am not proud of anything this 'country' does, has done, or will do (especially if 'it's attitude is not adjusted!). The country is a few pieces of paper, and the unwilling recognition by it's previous owners to yield control over the territory that was not rightfully theirs to exert control over.

No pride.

No offense to anyone but I personally find that the people who contibute most to a countries bad reputation, out of politics, are the people who are running it down, verbally. Real proud people of their country take the critisim on board and act possitively, to change their country for the best, however small their contribution can be.

Neither am I, but I can still be proud of things from the past. It's why people like Peter are proud to be fans of West Ham United because they used to be great teams...

:jk:jk

Kind of, but I would be a proud West Ham supporter if we were as shit as Coventry ( :jk Ian) It's the supporters who make the club, whatever the success. Chelsea haven't got a positive reputation despite their success because of their plastic fans, they can never match West Ham supporters who outsing them, even at away games. Despite all their success, most people would enjoy the atmosphere at West Ham over that at Stamford Bridge.

Kind of backs my point up about country pride here, it's the people who make the country good, not the government.

Well a lot of people are saying that being proud to be an American means that I am 'proud' of my current government, or whatever, but I'm not. There are tons of different things to be proud of in everything. I've found quite a few things associated with the word "America" that I have become quite proud of being a part of.

What I'm saying is, though, what have YOU done to make people visiting the USA, have a better opinion of it and go home saying "Y'know, those Yanks get a bad rep but the're really nice people"?

Well, I'm not on the foreginer welcoming committee!

I don't do stuff to make us 'look good' I do stuff to make us have a better country and world. I think me starting a non-profit to stop global warming has contributed to that.... and the impact the US has had on the environment.

I also have a brother in the Army that might be sent to Iraq.

So if you dont do anything, however little to make your country look good and dont care either, what right have you to have pride in it?
Your brother serving in the army, yes pride for him but he's not you.

Are you saying that people with family in the army don't have to make sacrifice? I see him like once every 3 years, btw.

There is more to take pride in then what your country looks like. I care, not what other people think of my country, but of my country itself.

Seriously wtf are you talking about peter! :willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

lol I'm proud to be an American because I am apart of a great country. I put into the education system, I have paid part of my checks at work to taxes, I've recorders thousands of volunteer hours, I am a prominent member of the FFA one of the highest recognized American organiztions in the world.... etc.

Almost every citizen that lives in America contibutes enough to it to be proud of being a part of it just by paying their taxes, as it is with every other country in the world.

Yes, paying stuff into America will make the rest of the world love you ( you do know about the rest of the world, right? It's quite big!)
