Programs that focus exclusively on abstinence have not been shown to affect teenager sexual behavior
Well of course they haven't in the secular world. The secular world teaches that we are sexual beings first and foremost and then tries to turn around and teach the opposite. What do they expect? Of course it isn't going to work.

Teenagers need to be taught about abstinence AND sexual protective measures should they not adhere to abstinence.

We support abstinence in our home. Our kids are not brainwashed by society's lie that we are mainly sexual beings and that what is in our pants rules us. Our oldest don't think if he isn't having sex that there is something wrong with him like most other kids inwardly do.

We teach our kids that we are intelligent beings first and that we will not allow ourselves be ruled solely by hormones and emotions. God gave us a mind. It is superior to our genitals for a reason.

Most people never mature to the point of having true self discipline. They continue to just react to life, instead of living life with intentional purpose. Tis sad imo.

Really? I've never heard any humanist say that before. Every humanist/secularist (me in included) I have ever talked to has always preached safe sex and being responsible, not "fee love" or anything. Humanists and secularists are all about teaching that humans are intelligent, important things. Humanists/secularists have always clearly defined that humans have a purpose. I would say that the religious world teaches us to have contempt for the body, which I think only leads to more problems.

"Two-thirds of the 48 comprehensive programs that supported both abstinence and the use of condoms and contraceptives for sexually active teens had positive behavior effect," said the report.

Encourage abstinence, champion abstinence, then EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE.

If you tell 'em "Don't have sex until you're married and that's all you need to know," that leaves the kids without the skillset to protect themselves, because kids are gonna get down. All else fails and children abound.

If you tell 'em "Hey, fucking is great and you can do it any time you want, so here's how you keep from getting STD's and making babies - here's a jimmyhat as a souvenir for going through our 'progressive thinking' program," that leaves them with the skillset to protect themselves (if they remember) and no moral compass to guide them. All else will fail and immorality will abound.

quit taking shit so personal.

She's talking about the secular world - advertising, mass media, the entertainment industry, television programming, publications.

It doesn't always have to be about you. Grace is right. The secular world does EXACTLY that. Sex sells. She wasn't talking about secularists/humanists. Got it? Good. Now quit arguing.

I agree that kids will do it either way. I actually find that really religious kids that I know fuck the most because they are repressed so much.

I don't think any serious sex ed program is forcefully telling kids to go out and have as much sex as possible. Providing condoms to kids isn't directly or indirectly sponsoring the idea of having sex, its sponsoring a degree of safeness just in case.

Your confusing secularism with big business. I'm pretty sure there are religious people in those advertising companies that use sex to sell.

Really? I've never heard any humanist say that before.
The media, the world, what our minds are bombarded with - brainwashing without even realizing it (trash in, trash out), commercialism wants us - as a society to believe we are sexual being first because if that takes hold first and foremost before rational, intelligent thought - it will sell us and line their pockets with their greed.

I would say that the religious world teaches us to have contempt for the body, which I think only leads to more problems.
You are right in the fact that the RELIGIOUS world teaches such, but that is not what the Bible teaches.

Jesus put the RELIGIOUS world in their place now didn't he? Yet still people are going around trying to live by the law and be RELIGIOUS! Amazing that we never learn.

If people read the Bible for themselves instead of being spoon fed religious law, they'd know that we are to love our bodies and to take care of them and to have respect for them and respect for other people's bodies as well. Part of loving our bodies is about being obedient and for good reason - it blesses us and others.

I agree that there is A LOT of sex in the media. it's always been that way, no matter what. I also agree that they are greedy, but I don't think those are secular/humanist values at all.

That's cute. I like it. Trite and shallow.

and once again, you played the religious card first.

But oh yeah, you don't argue about religion or bring it up - it's always someone else attacking your views. suuuuuuuuuure :smiley24:

this wasn't even anything about a religious debate until YOU brought it up in the third post.

You have very atheist concepts in your posts and I don't make atheism a part of the debate every time. I accept that you are who you are and stick to the issue as I see it.

Its human nature for adolecents to be curious about sex and their bodies, its part of growing up for some abstinance works for others it doesnt.Be they religious or not.The whole issue of sections of the media promoting sex at every opportunity and using it to sell just about everything is a completely different matter.
In a lot of cases certain religions have had serious problems within their communities due to the strict beliefs they hold and sometimes impose on their followers(ask anybody who's grown up in a predominantly catholic country about that).
Yet the images portrayed in the films,tv,music videos and magazines and newspapers have contributed to todays teens attitudes towards sexual activity just as much.IMO
