when i was much younger I used to believe there were aliens amongst us and believe i seen them or UFOs before
There are just so many stories out there with absolutely no real explanations. Barney and Betty Hill, Our Lady of Fatima, the Phoenix Lights, the ridiculously intricate crop circles that will appear overnight and how there seem to be weird gravitational fields in them, hell... even Roswell doesn't add up.
I've had a personal experience that I can't explain either.
Crop circles are man made. I've made some pretty intricate ones myself with just one mate to help me, it's not that difficult really if you plan it out in advance and have a team of you working on it.
I have no doubts that some of them are man-made... but there are others that truly defy explanation.
I would think if any ever did come it would be to take samples and run tests, but most research can be done just by picking up radio signals and far away observation if anything out there exists and was so implied to study us.
From how far away?
Considering radio signals have only been coming from this planet for a limited amount of years, they're probably thousands of years away from any lifeform that might exist yet.
Beat me to it.
There's a fantastic BBC series called the wonders of the solar system that explains this and more.
Remember, the Universe is old, and the correct conditions for life to thrive on planets do not last forever. However, this works both ways. We know now that Mars cannot sustain life, but once it's atmosphere was of such different composition - it probably thrived.
Even in the "wrong" conditions, activity, if only ecological, can thrive. Take Titan, moon of Saturn, it is similar to Earth in that it has one liquid substance that covers most of it's surface and could possibly facilitate the growth of life.
But it isn't water - it's Methane. Our hydrosphere is as to their methosphere.
Actually, the chances are really small:

While that equation is by no means perfect, its not a bad ballpark guess. What its great for is highlighting all the factors that come in to play here; there's a hell of a lot more to it than the number of galaxies.
As you should! :nod:Every time I go out at night, I look at the night sky for a while... I don't know why, because if I saw what looked like a UFO I'd probably run straight back into my house scared out of my mind. :24:
Probably because seeing is believing and the people who have never seen for themselves just don't believe and it's easier to label someone a nutcase for their beliefs than to admit the probablity of it actually being possible. So, here's another question... why do people that believe in aliens tend to be brushed off as nutcases?

Looking at it scientifically, it seems quite implausible that aliens are visiting us. The distances involved are enormous, not to mention the problem of radiation in outer space.
Also, the sky is being scanned constantly for radio waves... and we're yet to find a transmission of any kind...
