There are just so many stories out there with absolutely no real explanations. Barney and Betty Hill, Our Lady of Fatima, the Phoenix Lights, the ridiculously intricate crop circles that will appear overnight and how there seem to be weird gravitational fields in them, hell... even Roswell doesn't add up.

I've had a personal experience that I can't explain either.

Crop circles are man made. I've made some pretty intricate ones myself with just one mate to help me, it's not that difficult really if you plan it out in advance and have a team of you working on it.

I have no doubts that some of them are man-made... but there are others that truly defy explanation.

I'd like to see the ones that defy explanation. It maybe just that some are better at faking then others just as artistic ability varies from person to person.

To me, crop circles have always seemed as the least convincing evidence of visitors here. I would think if any ever did come it would be to take samples and run tests, but most research can be done just by picking up radio signals and far away observation if anything out there exists and was so implied to study us. Either that or it's a frat group of drunken aliens f'n with us

just a theory

From how far away?

Considering radio signals have only been coming from this planet for a limited amount of years, they're probably thousands of years away from any lifeform that might exist yet.

Want that in feet and inches or the metric system? AKA, how the hell should I know?

If a species has the capability to travel here, I obviously would have no grasp on their technology in the case a form such as that existed. My point was, if they wanted to study us, they don't need to land here and make crop circles. Look how much we know about our neighboring planets and we have yet to step foot on any of them.

Beat me to it.
There's a fantastic BBC series called the wonders of the solar system that explains this and more.

Remember, the Universe is old, and the correct conditions for life to thrive on planets do not last forever. However, this works both ways. We know now that Mars cannot sustain life, but once it's atmosphere was of such different composition - it probably thrived.

Even in the "wrong" conditions, activity, if only ecological, can thrive. Take Titan, moon of Saturn, it is similar to Earth in that it has one liquid substance that covers most of it's surface and could possibly facilitate the growth of life.
But it isn't water - it's Methane. Our hydrosphere is as to their methosphere.

if shrimps can live in sulpher pools and flamingo's eat the shrimps........life can turn up anywhere

Another flawed poll. There needs to be "undecided" or "other" or in this case "It's possible"- a statement that falls short of belief.

Actually, the chances are really small:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation

While that equation is by no means perfect, its not a bad ballpark guess. What its great for is highlighting all the factors that come in to play here; there's a hell of a lot more to it than the number of galaxies.

Even if you limit it to planets with similar setups as Earth, there are bunches. When you include planets where life unlike us could exist, I think it's a pretty good possibility. That does not mean they would be close enough to visit us though.

So, here's another question... why do people that believe in aliens tend to be brushed off as nutcases?

Looking at it scientifically, it seems quite implausible that aliens are visiting us. The distances involved are enormous, not to mention the problem of radiation in outer space.

Also, the sky is being scanned constantly for radio waves... and we're yet to find a transmission of any kind...

Belief means to commit to an idea. Do I think it is likely that there is life that originates elsewhere then the earth? Yes, but only based on how vast the known universe is. I don't believe there is other life outside the planet simply cause I don't know. I prefer thoughts over beliefs, thoughts are adaptable and allow for progression when new data is added and also allow for abandonment when new data is added. Beliefs tend not to die till after something very ugly happens and to the extreme can result in an impressionable 18 year old kid strapping a bomb across his chest.

There is a major level of difference with commitment in thoughts versus beliefs, and for allot of people, belief in the unknowable or unprovable will always be met with skepticism. However, an objective thinker will not completely abandon a thought till something is disproved. The fact remains, the people with beliefs over thoughts tend to be more extreme (not in all cases) but people who believe the unprovable will always be seen as nutcases unless that belief is socially acceptable.

And no, this does not mean an abandonment form convictions, more so the opposite, there is too much wishy washy people out there that stand for nothing and have figured out nothing. The trick is to actually figure some things out before opening your mouth. Actually bringing useful knowledge to the table instead of playing Devil's advocate, and being smart enough to know that the objective is to learn and not just win a debate. A better debater does not make a better thinker. Knowing the manipulation of language is not the same as as the exploration of thought. I find too many people like to stand on one catagoriagraphical group or another and the people in between seem either without opinion or knowledge in almost any subject material. The people that oppose the beliefs of the loud spoken extremities will always seem to be as nutcases, and I think it is because they believe their own rhetoric instead of actually think it.

Now to get off my soap box, but really, I think it really boils down to people believing in, or claiming to believe in, what in unprovable and also what goes against the present day paradigm. Neither of which are necessarily a bad thing IMO. It is just easier ti write them off as bat shit crazy

But that's awfully arrogant to think that because we haven't found radio waves that there's nothing there. Who is to say that they're still using something like radio waves if they've made it all the way here.
