So I heard someone giving this example at work the other day, and thought it merited sharing around with you all.
Think of two college students, Mike and Bill. Mike is always studying hard, spending hours and hours pouring over books in his room every night. Bill goes out and parties all the time, and never really studies at all. Their grades reflect the way they spend their time, as Mike gets almost straight A's, and Bill is often flunking out of his classes and getting C's and D's in the rest.
Graduation time comes, and Mike is ready to graduate with a 3.981 GPA. Bill has such a low GPA that he can't graduate yet - he has to retake classes. But wait! A new president of the university has been brought into power! This new president believes it's not fair to let anyone fail, so he goes up to Mike, and says this:
"Sorry Mike, I'm going to have to take some of your A's and swap them with some of Bill's D's so he can graduate. It's not fair to let anyone fall behind! Everyone should have an equal opportunity at life."
Isn't this exactly what we are up against with redistribution of wealth? People who work hard and get "straight A's" with money, just get it taken away from them and it's given to those who don't work hard and are getting "D's"! We all already have an equal opportunity to be the one who is getting A's, whether it be in college or in the working world.
Just thought this was a great way to think of why socialism isn't a good idea.
