that's when a parent or authority figure steps in ffs. Teenagers are still kids.

It must be hard on parents if they can't get through to their kids. but do the kids give the parents the fair shake? if the parents give in and want to talk, would their children follow?

Stories like this are just alarming. I don't know whether it was the crowd I hung out with, or the school as a whole, but I was friends with everyone from all different... Stereotypes, I suppose would be the word here. Also, I think my school was far too big for there to be anyone that enough people would ooo and ahh over the consider them the "popular" group. There was just very little bullying evident in my school.

I was bullied growing up. I know what its like. I never knew why they picked on me. I just accepted it as life. I lived with it. After a while, you feel sub human. You feel like you deserved it, like its the punishment for a crime you never did. Slowly but surely, your stripped of all your self respect and pride, but you always retain that one ounce of pride, and thats the last ounce of pride that doesnt let you reach out to tell anyone or get help. This girl had obviously fought a valiant battle everyday, but she couldent fight anymore.

This girl realized, that dead or alive she would have a reputation. She obviously valued her reputation more then her own life. It shows with her fast and secretive suicide. She didnt want to live with being a "snitch". But you need to remember that this must have not been her only issue. Other factors are at hand. It is of little significance that this was done online, because it would have happened to her regardless. If those other girls didnt have the internet as a tool to bully her with they would have just done it more in person, through text messaging or what ever other tools were possible at the time.

If her self-asteem was on par to begin with, this wouldent have been an issue. Some other factors must have already killed her confidence and pride, this just pushed her over the top to death. Its alot of accumilitave issues that lead to this girls death...but we only blame the last one.

people aren't going to like this comment, but i think that this girl probably brought it on herself. indulging in the continuous bullying and she didn't leave? doesn't make sense. i remember aol chat rooms when i was 12/13 and i dont remember seeing one "innocent" person being bullied.

Let me understand your point..

No one is 100% "innocent" so the crime of bullying was fine. Also might it be OK because it was done in cyberspace and not in real life ?

So I guess next time someone decides they want your money on the street, the police should just let them beat the crap out of you and take it from you, because no one is totally "innocent" on all tax deductions or any money related issues such as expenses, just because..

You do realize the cyber crime was happening in her town and was local to her.. Equivalent to spray painting on her wall, car or any other property. But now it's even worse as in cyberspace it never goes away and is seen by millions faster then ever..

Sorry but your feeble attempt to make this incident "her" fault does not wash IMO.. :thumbdown

Actually, I was bullied a lot as a kid and doing that made it worse for me. A girl physically assaulted me, nothing major, but I had enough and went to a teacher. So he called her out in front of the entire gym and it got worse. She was in a lot of my classes and typically left me alone, but after that I was fair game every where I was.

She even went as far as to get a girl to throw an orange at my head, definitely hitting it's target. :/ It's not as easy as "Just tell someone" because that can just make it worse. getting hit with an orange doesn't sound too bad, but when they throw it as hard as they can it literally hits you right in the temple in front of 60 kids (classes were changing) then it fucking sucks.

So I can definitely see how a girl could be pushed to such lengths, and it's a sad thing. Horrible.

At my old high school they have begun challenge days. They are specifically targeting kids that went to my middle school, where i was bullied, because it is apparently getting worse and worse.

With some bully's if you tell the parent it just makes matters worse. I took more than my fair share of abuse. Mainly after 6th grade. I ignored it the best I could and did nothing to fuel their desire. Bully's are like attention whores. The more you react to them the more they pick on you. You may have some success with contacting parents if the bully's are young but if they are in high school I suspect more times than not it will not work and you will have created more problems away from the school.

Lol? Feeble attempt? I don't give a shit about your emotional response. By non- innocent I mean she did not fully attempt to avoid the situation. I believe she provoked the situation. People may get bullied, but they do it back and even more often start the bullying themselves. I know from oberving people doing it. Most 15 year olds show very similar behavior and it's hard for me to believe 1 out of the whole bunch is different from the rest. :p

Is the issue cyber-bulling or just bulling? Yes cyber makes it easier, and maybe it can pile up faster, but the basic mechanics remain the same. I guess my point is, should the focus be on cyber or on bullying?

If a kid is too scared to tell a parent then " society fails ". Please explain your reasoning.

Many kids are afraid because they think somehow they are at fault, and maybe to some degree they are, in that they might not be totally blameless. This happens especially in case of children who have been molested. Although it's not their fault, they think they will get into trouble if they bring it up.

I was actually looking forward to Dana's reply. I think it could have been interesting. But... seeing as you answered I'll take a shot just for the hell of it ok.

Yes it was my fault I stuttered so bad as a kid that even my parents couldn't understand me. Because of that I was bullied to no end and have received and given more bloody noses than I could count. I was also overweight as a kid so I guess that's more blame to pile on me. Once again, many broken noses dispensed. Never did I tell my parents or anyone else for that matter, not because I was afraid but because I didn't want to appear weak. As I got older the bullying stopped because I became quite a good fighter, was fearless and can handle a hell of a lot of pain. A very dangerous combination. I learned to use my size to my advantage. Nothing like age and experience.

ps: I no longer stutter unless I get very excited, angry, tired or upset. My weight is no longer an issue. I am still of larger stature but I carry it very well. I still have a good 20 - 30 seconds of fight left so if someone can last that long I'm done for. :D

So what makes a person " guilty " enough to warrant bullying?

when they don't have the incentive, desire, or intent to keep themselves out of trouble. they want to get in trouble and piss people off, then leave before they're attacked. well, it sucks for her but she happened to get caught in her own game.
