that's an interesting statistic, but I'm wondering how such a figure is obtained. Surely events like Columbine and Aurora would fall into both categories?
How would you define what is and is not terrorism?

I believe this would qualify as an act of domestic terrorism... it has certainly inspired fear among the populace or potential copycat attackers. We would have to know what his true motivations were, but the end result is a state of irrational fear and/or panic among a lot of the populace.

Perhaps if you put a little more effort into reading EVERYTHING what is written, and a little less effort into cherry-picking soundbites that you can use to support your preconceived ideas, you might become a more credible debater. If you could address the essence of an argument, rather than chalking up imaginary wins in your head by focusing on the narrowest possible interpretation of everything that you disagree with,it would be that much harder to dismiss you as a mere troll. Your apologies come across as insincere.

As to a society where there is no fear from guns, I'm living in one. As I've explained before, New Zealand has relatively high levels of gun ownership, but appears to be able to manage firearms in a more intelligent manner. Strict legislation around types of guns and ammunition, coupled with a sensible rules around storage and transport of weapons and a rigorous licencing system mean that guns very rarely figure in crime news. Interestingly, the argument that 'alternative weapons will be found if guns are unavailable' doesn't hold water here either. If as claimed, violence is inevitable with or wiithout guns, there would be some kind of parity in overall homicide rates between gun owning nations and those that restrict or ban their sale.

Instead, the homicide rate per capita in the US is 4 times that of NZ. IO'm not sure whether this is because Americans are bred to be more beligerent, or whether the presence of guns helps to justify violence, but the general consensus here would be that America is going down a self-fulfilling track to a violent society. The average police officer does not carry a sidearm, the average gun owner treats it as hunting tool rather than a means to quell their own insecurity about other gun owners. You may not care for the truths surrounding firearm statistics, but I'm not about to be intimidated into not challenging third-rate debating techniques when I see them.:)

That's right, I forgot... I'm the bad guy. My bad, I should've remembered that. I also should've used the "royal we"... God knows there are people that'd be all over me if the situation was reversed.

Your not a bad guy at all. Like I said don't be offended. Enjoy each day bro.

A good balance is truly needed here in the states when it comes to gun ownership ... most definitely.

But anyway... it's still a tragedy. People like KD think that guns should be completely illegal, and he's perfectly entitled to his viewpoint... just as I'm entitled to mine, that Second Amendment rights are very important, and that a disarmed society is one begging to be stepped all over worse than our government does to us already. But I suppose that just makes me a "gun nut" with lots of cliches...
Something I agree with you on...

Agreed. What happened to assist this guy on making such a decision? What would make someone hate society so much?

What could possibly happen to a person that would make it ACCEPTABLE to open fire in a crowded theater, shooting 71 people??? I don't get that line of reasoning.

On a side note, I dreamt last night that this guy took a college classroom I was in hostage. I escaped by asking to go to the bathroom and then jumping out the window.

Who in their "right" mind would?

I did find it interesting that when this guys mom was contacted she noted right off the bat that the authorities had "the right guy". My question is what in her sons life made her believe right off the bat that they had the right guy? It could be total BS, but a gun range owner had reported that he had instructed his employees to deny this nut job a range membership.

Look at the guy from Virginia Tech and how he slipped though the cracks. Makes me wonder if this guy showed some "nut job" behavior and either people ignored it or the information wasn't processed properly.

Heck, look at Sgt Bale and the night he went out and killed 16 innocent civilians. Does being in war make killing unarmed civilians acceptable?

Tashie, I will put this in everyday terms:

I told my wife once "you're all fucking crazy....but it's not the crazy I see that worries me. It's the crazy I don't see..."

Get it? See the analogy?

IMO we are starting to fail as a society, acts like this are becoming to common.
Kids slaying each other at school for instance,We need to know what is going on in the minds of the ones that commit these acts, perhaps learn from it and steer accordingly.

Whats so different as compared to fifty years ago?
We essentially get our values from our parents and also at school.
Perhaps gone is a value system itself...the belt..the corner...writing on the chalkboard when one has been bad.
Lets face it we no longer put society first but rather ones self.

It used to be when you got in trouble at school you got in trouble at home.
Now its...."you cant tell me what to do mom I am telling my teacher"

I blame drugs and not just illegal drugs... We're a country that has become prescription dependent. Turn on any station and you see commercials for some sort of drug. You never saw this before the turn of the millennium.

We are not trying to justify his actions, just trying to figure out why there is an increase in such behaviors
