'Meh' is the latest word to be added to the Collins English Dictionary. Popularized by the Simpsons, now it is more common in everyday life.

My question is, is it really needed? Just like a few years ago they added d'oh (used to express sudden recognition of a foolish blunder or an ironic turn of events)

We all know what Meh means, but do we really need judge's, police officers, and our politicians saying it (A little far fetched).

agreed, these aren't even real words, 'meh' shouldn't be considered a word, you can't even put it in a sentence.

Same with d'oh

If it's in common usage, I guess those people you mentioned should really know its meaning. Personaly I have a bigger problem with the abuse of the word, like.

Slang is the use of highly informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in the speaker's dialect or language. In fact some of the slang that originated in local areas have been broadly used and now receives recognition in dictionaries.

Agreed, but that's just over time slang kind of way of using it, which is a whole other level.

Just because we say something a lot, doesn't mean it should become english vocabulary, it's just garbage slang talk.

Meh is the equivalent of saying "I don't care"

It's garbage!

and it's highly disrispectful.

Tell someone you don't care, is one thing, just shrug your shoulders and say meh, is just plain ignorant

Lol, whether a person wants to be ignorant is up to the person themselves... I don't think we should disclude a word from the English language just because it's distasteful. Otherwise we'd have many more words that weren't defined but in daily use.

We need to look at the purpose of language and dictionaries to decide whether a word should include them.

Language is for communication (obviously). Does "Meh" communicate something? Yes, as Mike pointed out, it communicates that you don't care, or have no opinion about something.

Dictionaries are for defining words or phrases that are in use to help us better understand their use. Is there a particular way the word "Meh" should be used, and is it currently in use? Yes, and it can be defined by a definition similar to the one given above.

I'd say any word or "sound" that is useful for communication, can be clearly defined, and is in common use should be included in the English language and the dictionary.

that word is not in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary that I am holding in my hands....

how would you define its use in your every day language Peter?

Noun
1 - the female genitalia
2 -a horrible person, lowest of the low
3 - Someone who is being out of order but funny
4 - someone you feel sorry for in some way
5 - a person

Verb

Go (cunt off)

See now in my dealing in the military, kids are cocky these days. Meh, to a superior, comes off not as "I don't care" but "I could give a fuck less" And that's where I have a probelm with it.

It's kind of like the last taboo a part from racist words, Shakespeare used it and grope cunt lane was actually a common road name in medievil England, it's a facsinating history!

Oh.... I can just see the teacher now preparing the class for that lesson of the day....

Her name is Miss Farbucket.... she's 36.... virgin of course.... wearing a loose fitting polyester dark green dress that stops just below her knees... matching dark green boots that meet just at the dress hem.... thick glasses.... her hair tied back into a neat bun... very tight but tidy.... She looks about the classroom at the bored teenagers... some picking their zits... others their noses... and begins..

"Class..... Class. Dammit! Shut up and listen!"

The class pauses and wonders if she is serious or not.... She appears flustered more than usual. This could be good. Slowly they all sit up and forward in anticipation of potential fun.

"We are now going to explore in our history lesson for today, the beginnings of Grope Cunt Lane." (Miss Farbucket swabs at her forehead after barely choking the words out. She is feeling flushed.)

Several snickers rise from the class, immediately followed by raucous uncontrolled laughter by the boys.

Well... the rest you'll have to imagine because I'll be damned if I'm gonna write any more!!!!!! :willy_nilly:

Yes... interesting indeed. :D

Again, just because it's inconsiderate of a superior doesn't mean it shouldn't be included in the English language. At least IMO. I mean, you wouldn't go calling your superior an idiot, but that word is still in the dictionary...
