Is Autism really that bad?

People live day to day with what? Autism really isn't that bad. There are treatments.

No, fortunately i only associate with "normal" people. Don't punish me for being fortunate enough to not have to deal with autistics. And you're ruining my awesome thread.

Why am i doing what? I recognise that autism is a medical condition, but it's not life threatening, and the condition barely stops them living productive lives. So... how does it effect your day to day life? Not very much, should be the answer. Considering they're "normal" people too.

Normal by the way wasn't meant as an insult. Normal to me, would be to not have autism. Since most people don't.

You don't think autism is life threatening? What would you do if your child with autism accidentally wandered off (as many kids do every day) and had no way of communicating their need for help? Many "autistics" as you refer to them have no communication skills whatsoever.

Living productive lives is usually only possible if you have Asperger's which is the highest functioning level on the Autism Spectrum. Most individuals with autism require care for their entire lifespan and will not lead a "productive life" in the eyes of society.

Before you respond with such a statement, you should check your facts. Or perhaps, do not respond to something you have no inkling of knowledge on.

Wikipedia said:
Self-injury: includes movements that injure or can injure the person, such as biting oneself. Dominick et al. reported that self-injury at some point affected about 30% of children with ASD

How exactly is this not a life threating condition, yes it only occurs in a few cases but still, it is life threatening.

And as Jersey has pointed out, there is a varying scale of autistic disorders, people at the unfortunate and higher end of this scale lead far from "normal," as you put it, lives. Imagine if you had to wake up evey morning and do things in the exact same way, or became so compulsive that you had to tidy things in a certain way. Now while this seems fairly harmless take a scenario that involves an appliance of some kind, While you or i would stop to check if it is plugged in/on an autistic person may not and may compulsively move or clean it, this could lead to electricution etc . . . yes that seems like a far fetched scenario, but it could happen and that is the point.

to be honest...i have nothing but admiration for parents of kids who were born autistic......now i'm no expert on the subject but i've learned a little bit while i've been on this site.......its just a pity a few others dont try to learn a little

A kid doesn't wander off because he has autism. If your child is autistic, you should be more carefull. That's common sense really. You could always purchase a lead if your parenting skills suck that badly.

Ad for leading a productive life, there is no reason why high level autistics can't be put to work in fields or anything like that.

You really have no fucking idea what you're talking about do you?

Until you have raised a child with Autism, or worked with them, you have absolutely no basis for an opinion.

To me you're just being controversial and inflammatory, which is really sad coming from someone with such self proclaimed intellect.

Knowing someone with autism doesn't make you an expert. And it's ridiculous to suggest that a symptom of autism is "getting lost". That can happen to any child. You have to be carefull.

Besides, this thread really misrepresents what i said. I said that autism isn't that bad compared to more serious afflictions.
