DENVER - John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.
Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.
At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months — Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

As a voter to pick a Republican female when you can't have your Democratic female would show a complete lack of understanding of party platforms, goals, and standards. But wait, the last two elections the electorate has been more than able to pick a total loser for a leader. It's possible! The agenda would be to get a woman, any woman elected to the second top spot. I understand! :D

That is exactly what they are doing. They chose her in an attempt to grab the disappointed women who were dying to have a woman in the white house.

The only problem is that she is Pro-Life and Pro NRA. These are two things that will not sit well with the women who supported Hilary. I also believe that the vast majority of women who supported Hilary did not do so on the simple fact that she was a woman. They view Hilary as a strong intelligent woman with all the right qualities. I don't see very many of them going with McCain simple because he picked the former Miss Alaska runner up.

The Democrats are going to have a field day with this pick... I mean couldn't he at least pick a running mate that isn't currently under investigation? I don't know, they are going to pick her apart. The vice presidential debates will be fun to watch.

McCain is a genius for picking Sarah Palin !!!!

She's a mom.....to 5 kids!
She's a governor....the most popular governor in the U.S with a 90% approval rating!
She has ethics and integrity!
She is down to earth!
She runs the State with the OIL!
She has a kid in the army.
She's still married to her 1st husband!

And the pundits Republicans and Democrats have all gone crazy with the questionableness of this pick. At least they call it a huge gamble. Only time will tell. She's got no national presence so she is a blank slate.

Obama is married to his first wife. Now lets see about McCain, checking..... nope! :)

"Running the State with OIL" is supposed to be some kind of draw to disaffected Hillary supporters and Independents?

And as far as popularity, you're talking about the 3rd least populous state in the U.S. It's the equivalent of being a mayor of a city.

The more I learn about her the more I like her.

She is very conservative and doesn't despise America.
Her dirty laundry, as in that investigation, is a joke compared to Obama and who he associates himself with.
She actually believes in the constitution.
As for experience, she has been an elected official years before Obama ran for the Illinois senate.

To be honest, this made me chuckle when I read about McCain's selection of her. It will be interesting to see how this plays on the women voters; whether they listen to Hilary telling them to vote for Obama, or vote for McCain just because there would be a women VP.

I think the real reason McCain choose her is because he needs to add some sex appeal to his campaign. ;)

I think it has a 50% chance of backfiring, making him look like a cynical chauvinist pig for thinking women are so shallow that they'll vote for a woman they disagree with simply because she's a woman.

Sure, there are a few PUMA nutjobs, but at this point in time I don't think there will be a huge amount of votes to be won on this.

doubt any of us are very familiar with her. before condemning the pick I would give her a chance to express herself. She sure is not one to get pushed around and is unafraid of pissing off the party leaders so this could be interesting. plus she aint bad to look at. some might take offense at that comment but how one looks and presents themselves is part of the package.

Also, i think that he may have just nullified his best argument against Obama, and might even have it turned around on him... "A former beauty pageant winner and hockey mom turned Mayor of Backwater who's been governor of one of the least populous states in the nation. Is this the person you want a heartbeat away from the presidency? Is THIS......what you want staring down Putin and Ahmadinejad?"

No one mentioned her openess to having creationism taught in schools either. I think America is the only country in the world where she'd have a chance of becoming a a vp.

McCain should have recruited someone else from Alaska. The magnificent Mike Gravel. His rock video was the single greatest political video ever created (apart from my video exposing Ron Paul as the anti christ).

Democrats should love this about Palin

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, has pushed development of renewable sources of energy as a means of reducing oil consumption, but has said he could be open to tapping some areas that are currently off-limits.
Obama, like McCain, opposes drilling in ANWR, an area that environmentalists say would be damaged by the oil industry.
But Palin also pushed through a tax increase on oil and gas producers last year that doubled the state's energy revenues to more than $10 billion.

That's not true. Ron Paul is pretty much an anti semite, his policies certainly suggest that (cutting off aid to Israel etc), and i was pretty vocal in my disgust for him. So much so that some of my writings were published on his website. I put in a lot of time and effort to expose him as a "racist", and he actually is one, unlike me.

Seeings as Alaska is the moral property of Russia, i could never really support the states governer.
