Well I apologize then. I don't see why the hell they would make you pay for "faster" downloads. I thought it was paid for because it was legal.

Limewire is like any other P2P. It's all illegal. The money you pay to Limewire, goes to Limewire and their program. Not to artists or record companies. Limewire itself does not upload the music, they just provide the program for peers to share with each other.

Legalities are ALWAYS vague. And talking specifics on the WORLD WIDE web doesn't work since countries and sometimes states have different laws. But in general:-
  • The "biggie" is duplication and sale for profit. That is, set in stone, 100% illegal.
  • The next is distribution. That is generally illegal and if you use bittorrent or any P2P network, you are sharing (distributing) at the same time as downloading, thus you are distributing the file. It's no good turning sharing off, leeches are a blight on any P2P network, usually banned where found and simply, it can't work because if everybody leeched, there would be nothing to leech from - P2P relies on sharing. So if you're going to use P2P, know the risks but play fair and take the risk along with everybody else. If you don't want to share, then use something that is download-only (binaries newsgroups, or FTP/HTTP downloads)
  • Watching a streamed video would be the hardest to prove illegal, unless you copied it whilst watching. Unless the streaming was over a P2P network (like tvants or Pcast for instance) as you are also taking part in the "broadcasting" of the video as you watch.
Now we get more vague and into interpretations.
  • It could be argued that the act of downloading a file is also an act of reproducing the file. Since there was one file, shared on the internet.; You downloaded it. That digital copy is now a file in it's own right. You have, by the act of downloading, made a reproduction.
  • Same goes for burning that copy onto a CD, you have taken that digital copy and made a tangible copy from it. There could be an argument that this is unauthorised reproduction.
Fact of the matter is, downloading via P2P or Bittorrents is illegal, and morally shouldn't be done. Again, I DO do it. I'm just curious to know how everyone else felt about the matter, as it's a very big trend.

BitTorrent is a shit site that hates it when people bust them for pirating shit. A volunteer group worked with the MPAA to set up a fake illegal movie downloading site, which recorded IP addresses so the MPAA could take action against it, and BitTorrent found it wrong to do that. Fucking morons, it's wrong to download this shit illegally in the first place!
 
Well, you're right..but are you sure about BitTorrent?

Last time I was there you had to pay to download. Either rent or buy from them. I think BitTorrent is the only legalized Torrent site.

Edit: I just went there again, and it's still the same. Rent or buy movies from them. The whole point of illegal downloading is not to pay for your download. So I don't know what's going on there.

Well then maybe it's another Torrent site, but I don't even know what the fuck a "Torrent" is. All I know is I saw a post on BitTorrent I think it was, and they complained about that shit.
 
Sounds similar to 'torrentspy'. They had a big post about what you're talking about with the IPs. They didn't comply so now United States people can't download from them.

A torrent is tiny file with what's called 'metadata'. As more and more people start downloading one torrent, then the metadata is being spread around faster. So getting a movie you're downloading little pieces of the movie from everyone else, who are also downloading at the same time. Hmm, it like, gathers the information, so to speak.
 
what I download most are TV shows. I do it because I want them in English(original version is just so much better). I don't understand why that should be illegal anyway since they are playing them on TV or were even played years ago and everyone can record them.
And the times I have downloaded music... well, I just couldn't buy it over here where I live, and I like it so I want to have it!
Oh, and cds here cost 20€ or more. I'd be happy to go to America to buy cds!

Oh, and that something is legal doesn't mean anything other than that. I bought some books when I went to London and it says "you can't lend this book". What the hell is that? why do they tell me what I have to do with my property?
 
I don't download music period. I know it's a popular thing, it's just that I can't be bothered to spend the time doing it. I prefer to have the packaged CD inclusive of high quality print packaging and full audio content. Just feels better for me.

I have however benefited from downloaded music from friends. However that has been a very minuscule amount. One or two CDs for the most.

Movies (pirated) sold by venders, have to admit have bought a few of those. Although there are movies I prefer to purchase as the authentic packaged item. For example: The movie "300". Although I could have bought a pirated copy I chose not to do so but wait to purchase the authentic packaged product. Same as for "Lord of the Rings" boxed set, King Kong etc.

Nic, I've already posted the mathematics involved in piracy, and piracy of movies and music does put a pretty substantial dent in the profit of an actor. I've done the math, and as I said about two pages back, believe me when I say that illegally downloading even one movie from Youtube can take away almost 30-40% of a film maker's profits.

Nic, have you ever seen the behind the scenes of how a person makes a movie? That shit isn't easy. It takes a lot of money and hard work to make a movie, and it's wrong for us to steal it from them. No, downloading a movie doesn't literally cost them money right then, but they lose that customer, and therefore lose profits.

Nic, let's say you opened a DVD store. I walk in, grab all the DVDs I like, and walk out, without paying for them. You'd call the cops on me for theft, obviously. It's the same situation online, only the DVD store is bigger, and there's more people to try and catch, who have smarter ways of hiding.

I already told you Nic, I can't fight what I can't see, but I do volunteer work for the MPAA, so don't go around bragging about what movie you pirated from what site, or I'll report the site and you to the MPAA. As I also said earlier in this thread, the MPAA isn't something to fuck with, they'll give you up to $150,000 in fines for piracy, and up to 90 days in jail.
 
well if someone buys a movie and then uploads it to a computer and people download it how is that different from someone buying a movie, selling it to someone or trading it to game stop and then someone purchasing that movie used over and over again. they get the movie and the movie industry lose out on a new video sale.

i doubt Game stop or a used video store will send the movie industry money for that used sale.

same with CD's

Actually, the movie company that did the movie gets a certain percentage of DVD sales. Also, Piracy is different. You OWN the DVD, therefore, it's legal to allow a friend to watch it. I forgot it all, but James brought this up before.

so when i trade in a movie to game stop and someone else buys it used. Game stop sends the company that made the movie a certain percentage??

or if i go to a small no name used video store, when i buy a USED video there. they will send the company that made the movie a % of the sale

I didn't find it on a certain site, it's common knowledge. No, I don't think they just up and mail the money to Universal, but the people get a certain percentage of the DVD sales.
