As I understand it, the gunman was captured alive. It would be nice to think that the authorities could use him for research purposes and try to at least establish why he felt the need to behave the way he did, but I suspect that a primitive desire for revenge will dictate most of their actions.

Happens a lot more than you think. Trust me. I spent Memorial Day a few years ago watching SWAT take cover behind my vehicle b/c my neighbor was holding his mother at knifepoint. And that was long before I was on the SWAT team myself.

Yanno...that's just one of those things where I think it was just her time to go. She escaped it the first time, somehow, but this time she didn't. Very sad.
We had a police officer killed in a motorcycle wreck last year. Less than 6 hours before his accident, a guy swung on him w/ a knife at a local restaurant. Had he been a few inches closer, he would've died. That he died in a motorcycle accident 6 hours later floored me...obviously it was his time.
It really makes you think...or it does for me anyway.
I think the whole situation is horrible. Even if someone else in the theatre had a gun, there is no guarantee that he/she could have made a difference.
With all the confusion & the darkness in the auditorium, there could have been even more people injured, instead of the murderer being taken out.

You are right, we will all be better served if he is put to death by lethal injection. Hell, why make it painless? We can just hang him in the town square or stone him like good Christians do. Better yet, if we draw and quarter him behind a few horses the sheer gore factor will keep others from doing it. Maybe we can make the whole thing pay-per-view so the tax payers can be paid back.
Coddled? Seriously? You think due process and humane treatment equals coddling?

Exactly. And do folks understand what happens to young white boys in prison? I think a prison sentence in the general population might just be worse than death row.

If anyone can demonstrate a historical event a deranged individual can kill a dozen people and injure dozens more in a crowd without a firearm, I will happily accept that the universal availability of firearms was not a factor in this tragedy.
I agree, he should be saved from a horrible existence in prison. Give him one appeal and then execute him immediately. Works for me.
