I also find it hard to believe that almost everyone who posted here didn't get ANYTHING from their parents after they turned 18. Could be wrong, but i doubt it.

Maybe you didn't read my post but I pay for EVERYTHING ON MY OWN. I welcome different insight, but there's no need to be rude.
As for "staying out of their financial lives", I don't have to go very far. I have to listen to my parents scream at each other over simple money issues because they don't have the common sense to create a budget (or let me help them make one). As long as they're going to throw their money away, they may as well let me tap into a stream of it for something that is actually needed/useful.

You know what I'm really stuggling to understand: how you can say your parents have bad money issues, no savings etc yet you want them to give you a car? Or have I really missed something?
